Reviews Summary

Bill's Reading offers a charming dining experience with attentive service and a diverse menu, but some guests have noted inconsistencies in food temperature and lengthy waits, even with reservations. The ambiance is often praised for its unique decor, making it a popular spot for brunch and casual dining, though drink options for children could be improved.

"Beautiful place with delicious food, I can not express enough how much I recommend to visit. The service, the atmosphere, the food 10/10. The portions are massive, I've decided to go for pancakes with bacon and maple syrup. It was one of the best pancakes I've had. My partner decided to go for sourdough with eggs and salad, which he said was delicious. We also got some chorizo, which i absolutely loved. The tea was served in adorable tea cups, which fit the whole design of the place. They do have separate menu for the 2 and 3 courses and serve slighly different dishes depending on breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you're a fan of pancakes, they also offer bottomless pancakes between certain hours. I've attached all the pictures of the menu and details down below. There is plenty of parking at the oracle shopping centre which is a walking distance from the restaurant. If you're visiting Reading, this is a must go."

"We’ve been to Bill’s before but this was the first time in Reading. It’s in a beautifully old building though unfortunately overall we were underwhelmed. The service was faultless, very attentive, polite accommodating and responsive.

Despite booking we had to wait 30 minutes for our table with others, cramped in the hallway/stairwell. Overall the place lacked the air of cleanliness and was very chaotic.

The food was more bland previously experienced and not hot enough. There was an imbalance in ratio of pancake to topping, which meant that there was a lot of bland pancake to get through without accompanying fruit etc despite trying to make it look pretty. Be aware that the “pancake syrup” is NOT pure maple syrup. This was obvious in taste too and felt a bit deceptive as maple syrup was mentioned elsewhere on the menu.

This place is well suited for those with kids or larger groups less concerned with quality and more with a having a gathering with food. There are plenty of options and they cater for different dietary needs."

"It’s really lovely that we had an outside table. Especially for the service, Kasia was super nice, she gave us brilliant recommendation, as well as asked our feedback. Her recommendation of the food was surprisingly delicious, we had a wonderful experience in this restaurant due to the tasty food and friendly service. ☺️"

Things have changed a lot since the eponymous Bill Collison opened his homespun grocer-cafe in Lewes, in 2001. Now, his baby is a nine-strong chain, which seeks to retain some of the original's allotment chic, while giving you the hard sell. Barely have you sat down (on a seat cushion fashioned from an old potato sack), than your waitress is pressing a menu into your hand, from which you can tick-purchase the cordials, oils and tinned olives stacked on the nearby shelves.
