Reviews Summary

Diners rave about The Shore Restaurant, highlighting Chef Bruce Rennie's artistic approach to seafood, fresh local ingredients, and the intimate, welcoming atmosphere. The unique, personal presentation of each course and the chef's passion are frequently praised, making it a memorable experience. While most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a rare comment mentioned issues with elevator accessibility and an experimental side dish.

"Just go. Bruce is an ARTIST: everything we ate on the tasting menu (see below) was locally produced, passionately explained, and made to perfection by a friendly, funny, decorated expert chef.

Be sure to understand going in that this is a tasting menu, made and served by a single person: expect to spend a few hours here, turn up on time, and that it's an experience rather than a "regular" restaurant. The individual portions aren't going to be mains in their own right (but there are seven of them - we rolled out when we were finished): the focus is on creativity and getting the best out of every ingredient (all of which were without exception high quality).

Truly an amazing experience; we'll be back again!"

Chris Fletcher

"What Bruce Rennie is doing here is truly special: a one-man band hosting a limited number of guests in a very tasteful dinner club kind of atmosphere with seafood prepared at highest level of skills with regional and seasonal produce of wonderful quality. Don’t miss it!"

Jochen Hiller

"This was one of the most unique dining experiences of my life! Bruce is an incredible chef and does a fantastic job describing each course! He also does all the serving and even the clean up! Dinner table format is great for meeting new people and sharing a true meal with new friends. Definitely worth the price. We will return!"

Bruce Rennie adores Japan and this small intimate dining room in the heart of Penzance celebrates his love of its cuisine. He uses the freshest ingredients, sourced from farmers and fishermen who are friends, to create mouthwatering umami dishes, from Izakaya small plates at lunchtimes to a beautifully balanced six-course tasting menu in the evenings. Each course is introduced by Bruce with enthusiastic panache before he dashes back into the kitchen to add the finishing touches.

The Shore – Penzance - a

The gregarious and welcoming Bruce Rennie is something of a one-man band here at this intimate restaurant with room for just 10 diners. He works alone in the kitchen and presents dishes to all his guests at the same time, in a warm, engaging manner. The tasting menu incorporates international influences ranging from Japanese to French, but each course is united by the quality of its produce, much of it the finest seafood from Cornish waters.

The Best Seafood Restaurants In Cornwall

New to the seafood scene in Cornwall, The Shore is a welcome addition. Head chef Bruce Rennie, who was previously head chef at Michelin starred Restaurant Martin Wishart, keeps his menu short, sweet, and exceptionally delicious. The food is unfussy but Bruce really knows how to show off the ingredients which are on his doorstep with nothing but complimentary accompaniments and a little magic.

The best restaurants in Penzance Central Cornwall, Isles of Scilly South West

Posting below a review I wrote in August 2022 after my first visit: ‘One of the absolute highlights of our Cornwall trip was a beautiful little gem of a restaurant in Penzance called the Shore. The chef, Bruce, greets you enthusiastically, barefoot, at the door, introduces every course to the 12 guests in the space, and does everything from nabbing the freshest fish from local fishmongers before they even go to the public to washing the dishes to renovating the space. Bruce is adamant on freshness and bringing out the fullness of the flavour in everything - sea and garden ingredients served with a Japanese-inspired twist.

By far the best seafood restaurant in Penzance is the Shore, the passion project of Scottish owner Bruce Rennie, who was previously head chef at Michelin-starred Restaurant Martin Wishart in Edinburgh. Rennie is a one-man band, making everything himself from the still-warm bread to the rhubarb sorbet, and often waiting on the dozen tables too. Much of the seafood is sourced from Dreckly Fish, a sustainable co-operative of fishermen who sell their catch directly from their boats in Newlyn, and the menu - hake with tenderstem-broccoli risotto, delicately cured pollack ceviche - evolves every few weeks.

In addition to cooking single handedly everything on the seafood tasting menu (served supper club style with each course served to the whole room at once), the always barefoot Rennie somehow manages to be on hand to greet his guests and pop out from the kitchen between courses to explain the often Japanese influenced dishes, all based around the freshest Cornish seafood available.
