A wonderful setting for this one star Michelin restaurant within the redbrick vaulted arches of a Victorian property where wealthy lace merchants once stored their carriages. Chef Alex Bond and his team work in an open kitchen, crafting a fine dining experience with three different price options and separate menus for vegetarians, vegans and pescatarians. The menu: Diners can expect dishes such as lobster, chanterelle, burnt lemon and brown butter, with truffle as a £15 supplement; celeriac cooked in whey, squid, black garlic and green olive, and aged beef, burnt aubergine and smoked egg yolk.

Firstly, how could we not include the winner of Nottingham’s Best Overall Restaurant 2019 AND best fine dining restaurant for 2019?. The restaurant, which dates back to the Victorian era and was once a coaching house, provides a subterranean redbrick backdrop for dining with archways, skylights, an open kitchen by the entrance, and living walls. And we almost forgot to mention that Alchemilla boasts a Michelin Star, and is the second restaurant in the county to receive the prestigious award!

A table at Restaurant Sat Bains may be the dream booking for any foodie visiting Notts (see below), but chef Alex Bond’s Alchemilla, opened last summer, is a similarly singular experience – and more affordable, too. Even the building is special. A 19th-century garage for horse-drawn carriages, all vaulted ceilings and exposed brick, it’s an unusual and chic cocoon, now augmented with living moss walls and a large open kitchen.

Alchemilla is the brainchild of Alex Bond, who was previously Bains’ chef de partie. Bond now focuses on immaculately presented and delicious veg and, although meat and fish is served and as perfect as you’d expect from a Michelin-starred restaurant, it’s the veg that really stands out. Big things will be coming from Bond so book a place quick and brag to your friends about visiting for years to come.

Chef Alex Bond’s Alchemilla is a lavish restaurant located underground in a cryptic space which used to be a deserted coaching house on Derby Road. For more than a century, the site was rotting and filled with trash until Alex Bond decided to renovate the premises and turn it into one of the best food places in Nottingham and in the world. The restaurant has a mysterious charm to it.

**2018 Update – Having been lucky enough to have eaten at Alchemilla several times now I feel confident that the level of cooking is as consistently high as I first rated it. The prices have gone up but still represent the same level of value with further refinement of some dishes and a few more extras. The service has certainly improved too which sees the overall score reach 9.5

I wasn’t blown away by the food at Alchemilla to be quite honest but don’t let my review put you off… I wasn’t feeling that well on the night so I don’t feel that I was particularly fair in my review.
