If I randomly picked an English city where I’d expected to find a vibrant coffee scene with one of the country’s top coffee shops, it wouldn’t be Norwich. Perhaps this is just a result of my ignorance, but tucked away in East Anglia, down the narrow streets of Norwich’s historic city centre, something very special is going on, and Strangers Coffee House is at the heart of it. With a south-facing aspect on the broad Pottergate, the late summer sunshine was showing Strangers off to the best possible effect.

Strangers Coffee is a favourite among the central locals and is always super busy, for good reason. Their coffee shop is found on Pottergate, with the roastery just around the corner on Dove St. If you’re going for some freshly roasted beans or a takeaway, I recommend heading to the roastery, where you will find a wall of coffee, equipment, merchandise and a 2-group Conti Monte Carlo for all your take-out needs. The guys here are super friendly and always up for a good chat, so don’t be shy!.

Award-winning artisan bakery Two Magpies has three branches in Norfolk, one in Norwich and two in North Norfolk – Holt and Blakeney – producing hand-baked goods and Allpress coffee to take away or eat in. Stacks of sourdough loaves line the walls; the bakery counter is piled high with glistening hand-laminated pastries and savoury bakes, while the generous slices of cake in the fridge are hard to resist. You can find the Strangers award-winning coffee shop and roastery within the Norwich Lanes, and their newest coffee shop in All Saints Green. The three brothers behind Strangers have spent over a decade learning the skills of the industry, focusing on the quality and ethics of the coffees they source, roast and serve. This tiny cafe in the heart of the city sells ethically sourced coffee from Costa Rica, Rwanda, Colombia, Brazil, Ethiopia and Guatemala and if you find a blend you love, you can buy a bag to take home with you.
