What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Diners praise the exceptional freshness and quality of the fish, with many highlighting the crispy batter and flavorful chips fried in beef dripping. However, some reviews mention blandness in certain dishes or a perceived lack of value for the price. Service can be a mixed bag, with some experiencing efficient and friendly staff, while others note disorganization or long waits, potentially due to understaffing. While often praised for quality, a few felt it didn't quite live up to the 'classic seaside chippy' expectation.
"The haddock and chips were delicious – pure white fish and not greasy at all. The chips were also very nice. I tried my friend’s cod, which was good too. The friendly staff and clean, modern decor made for a pleasant dining experience."

"I had the special: lemon sole goujons with chips. The lemon goujons were good, but I ordered this after reading Ricks own website about this recipe, in which he states it should be served with a liberal serving of tartar sauce. Unfortunately, despite the starting premium price, the sauce is not included and they want me to order in addition, which is a shame as having ate the meal without it, it would have made the meal.
The chips were average. Not bad, but not premium.
The staff were very good and after asking for feedback they agreed with this"
David Marks
"We enjoyed our visit to Stein’s Fish & Chips, the staff were friendly and very knowledgeable. My husband had the Catch of the day and chips which ended up being a cod-like fish - it was very nice and fresh. I had the special - soft shell crab chilli burger and it was very tasty, but a bit scary to look at! (I expected a patty not a whole crab!). The reason for 4/5 stars was it felt more like very good pub fish and chips and not the sea-side slightly greasy fish and chips I was hoping for, but might be personal preference. The unlimited chips was great although my husband and I shared his chips and didn’t want seconds."

The restaurant was created, like the 36 bedrooms across three different Padstow properties, by Jill Stein, hardly the better known of the pair but nonetheless with a crucial role. “There are few well-known women in hospitality,” says Jill, who began by offering bed and breakfast at home at the same time as running the nightclub.
St Petroc’s Bistro, Padstow review: ‘My turbot, the king of fish, was wonderful’
And they eat, these rare folk, in places called ricksteinrestaurants, of which there are several hundred in the throbbing metropolis of Padstow, from the original and epochal Seafood Restaurant (reviewed rapturously by me 20 years ago in a previous piece of intrepid reportage) to smaller offshoots such as Rick Stein’s Café and Stein’s Fish & Chips. But these were all full to the eyeballs with yodelling, ruddy-faced, lusciously blond-haired Cornishmen and women in classic Ralph Lauren cruisewear, chatting of imminent ski trips and week-long Maldivian jaunts before the irksome return to such places as Eton and Kensington, deep beneath the grimy waves.
