Set up and run by two brothers who have named their venue after their mum (but no, not that one), The Jane Eyre is much more than you might expect from its description as a ‘warm and welcoming neighbourhood bar’. And it’s a whole lot more than that, being one of the finest places to eat in the city. No surprise that the menu consists of small plates, but what small plates, with some of the food on offer more than rivalling more expensive nearby restaurants.

Following the success of the original bar in Ancoats, four of the Jane Eyre’s team set up a second site in the south Manchester suburb of Chorlton at the end of 2022. It’s a welcoming space with midnight blue and teak panelled walls, cotton flowers on tables and twinkling candles. Sit on a stool next to the bar watching bartenders mixing cocktails – order the spicy paloma, a tequila based cocktail with warming and zingy scotch bonnet agave.

Perhaps she lacks the instinct or curiosity that would very quickly lead her to one of the many amazing independent eateries Manchester has to offer these days: Erst, The Jane Eyre, Sparrows, to name just a few. Maybe they’re not high-brow enough for her to be seen in?. In which case I wonder why she doesn’t frequent Mana, or even the top floor of part-Pep Guardiola-owned restaurant Tast.

Nope, not a Brontë theme bar, all tempestuous Victorian gothic and Mr Rochester-inspired cocktails: it’s actually named after the late mother of owners Joe and Jonny Eyre. If anything, it feels like a Barcelona vermut bar – partly because of the clean white counters and small plates such as prawn pil pil, ham-hock croquetas and chorizo in cider, but mainly because it’s just such a nice place to hang out in the daytime. A place to sit at the bar with a glass of natural wine and bowl of almonds and watch life go by on Cutting Room Square outside – the epicentre of buzzy Ancoats.

Brothers Jonny and Joe Eyre said: “We took inspiration for the Jane Eyre from our late mum (not the book), and have been searching for the right neighbourhood and space to get the ball rolling. We’re going to be serving simple food and drinks made using high-quality ingredients.

First they conquered Ancoats, now its time to take on Chorlton's Beech Road - and by all accounts it's going very well. After starting out as a neighbourhood bar, the sleek cocktail spot on Cutting Room Square then made a name for itself with it's Sunday roasts and small plates. Its second home in Chorlton - on the former site of The Parlour - boasts a stylish fit out, redesigned bar and an outdoor terrace which is sure to become popular when summer rolls around.
