The unifying overall concept is "tastets": small tastes of food with greater complexity than tapas, some cooked in a charcoal oven, including butifarra, a Catalan Duroc pork sausage. Not too far up the main Deansgate strip and just a short turn onto King Street, you’ll find Tast: a Catalan tapas restaurant co-owned by Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, and overseen by multi-Michelin-star-winning executive chef, Paco Pérez. Put simply, the food is as top-notch as the footy. Specialising in specific cuisines from the municipality’s main regions – Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona – we consumed a lot of boquerones (anchovies), cod fritters and prawns here, but you can never go wrong with their top cuts of jamón ibérico and charcuterie boards either.

In a beautiful, modern dining space, it promises fare inspired by Barcelona made from carefully sourced ingredients and often fired up in its charcoal oven (think seabass 'El Txiringuito' and a 40-day-aged sirloin steak). Boasting one of the largest collections of Catalonian wines in the city, alongside international bottles, it's the ideal place to enjoy patatas bravas, and tuna belly with black olives and piparra alongside a glass of red.

Tast is a restaurant that aims to bring a bit of Barcelona to Manchester through its fun and flavourful Catalonian take on tapas. It’s the tapas dishes and Catalan rice that unsurprisingly shine the brightest but, that being said, there’s also a few rogue options that are worth exploring. The wagyu brisket bao bun, for instance, might sound like something that belongs on the menu of an Asian fusion restaurant in 2011 comes zhuzhed up with a rich fricando sauce that has just enough Spanish swagger to make it work.

Tast on King Street is as close to an authentically Catalan experience as you can get in the Rainy City, a corner of Spain transplanted here – in part – thanks to its co-owner, Pep Guardiola. A dual venue, you’ll find Tast on the ground floor providing a uniquely Catalan tapas experience, while Enxaneta on the top floor offers up the chance for Chef Paco Pérez to serve a menu with a distinct fine-dining feel. Either way, you’ll enjoy indulgent Catalan treats, or ‘tastets’ to give them their proper name.

What: If you don’t have a holiday to Barcelona in the works, you can at least recreate part of the experience at Tast, which now has a streetside terrace where you can soak up the sunshine. Alongside all of the usual tapas fare here, such as ham croquetas and patatas bravas, you will also find ‘tastets’ (sharing plates which are bigger than tapas but smaller than main dishes) - tuck into the likes of duck egg with baby squid and tartare sauce. Executive chef Paco Pérez, who holds five Michelin stars across seven restaurants around the world, is behind the Catalonian menu at Tast. ‘Tastets’ are similar in size to tapas, and beg to be matched with the all-Spanish wine list, Catalan gins and out-there cocktails (try vodka with apple, black garlic and basil oil). Order a couple of tastets each, then move on to shared rice platters, or the likes of Iberian pork presa and bone-in sirloin steak cooked in a charcoal oven.
