Step inside and you’ll find dark polished woods, shiny marble floors and pillars, and grey or cream-coloured corniced ceilings alongside airy, contemporary rooms with deep carpets (some swirly, others in coral reds), plush upholstery (pastel-grey tub chairs and sofas) and modern art features. Nothing is too much trouble here and the staff are slick and convivial, from the butler who unpacks your suitcases to the therapists at the svelte Aman spa. With Hélène Darroze (two Michelin stars), Jean-Georges, and two bars (stylish Coburg Bar and American-style Connaught Bar – the latter is famous for its excellent martinis), you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to eating and drinking.

A hotel known for its Englishness—a quality embodied in its celebrated central staircase (dark and woody of bannister, bright and stripy of carpet), which apparently drove Ralph Lauren into such a fit of longing that he commissioned a replica of it for his Madison Avenue shop. The Connaught Bar is a mini Art Deco masterpiece and our pick for the best bar in London. Holidays don't get much more British than a stay at the Connaught. Settled amongst the leafy streets that dominate the top of the Monopoly board and date back to 1897, this grand hotel comes with old-time butlers – who are also trained to wax and polish shoes by John Lobb bootmakers – original artwork by the likes of UK legends Barbara Hepworth and Damien Hirst, and little treats for little guests, including a mini umbrella, bathrobe and slippers, and a nanny service (at extra cost). But perks aside, we haven't even touched on the best bit yet: Aman Spa.

The city's wealthy flock to French virtuoso Hélène Darroze's restaurant at The Connaught for her dazzling regional French haute cuisine served up in a stylish Edwardian wood-paneled dining salon designed by Pierre Yovanovitch. Taking inspiration from the Les Landes region in southwestern France, Darroze sallies forth with a procession of magnificent dishes like turbot with rutabaga and razor clams. A great value weekday lunch is available on request at £125 per person.

Despite all the five-star formalities and Mayfair address, you don’t feel like you’re expected to be serious. It’s lively, there will probably be people having lunch next to you, and groups enjoying champagne at half one in the afternoon. And if you ask to be seated by the windows—which you should—you can watch everyone walking down the street with designer shopping bags in hand.

Restored to its former glory and simultaneously whizzed into the 21st century a little over a decade ago with the addition of a newer, minimalist, Asian-inspired wing and an exquisite Aman spa, this hotel, part of the Maybourne Group (Claridge’s, The Berkeley) is a Mayfair landmark.

Completing a trinity that includes Claridge's and the rooftop-enhanced Berkeley, the Connaught is one of London’s great heritage hotels, having first opened its polished Mayfair doors in 1815. The culinary credentials are impressive: Jean-Georges Vongerichten expanded his empire to include a restaurant here a few years ago, joining Hélène Darroze’s two-Michelin-starred temple to gastronomy. At the former, diners can watch the well-heeled regulars of Mount Street buzz through the sweeping circular windows as they feast on tuna tartare and deep-fried salmon sushi, along with perfectly cooked rib-eye served by the kilo with sides such as broccoli with mint and pistachio (and don't get us started on the savoury croissants lurking in the bread basket).

Should you find yourself tottering out of The Connaught Bar in search of something to soak up the just-one-more that’s starting to feel like one-too-many, you could do a lot worse than settle into a supremely comfortable tub chair at this dining room across the lobby where, if something can be coated in truffle, then it’s probably on the comfort-food menu, which among other bits, boasts truffle-crusted salmon with apple, celeriac and black-truffle vinaigrette; black truffle pizza with fontina cheese; or a cheeseburger with Somerset Brie, yuzu pickles and black truffle mayonnaise. Still got the munchies?. Try eggy brioche toast topped with Imperial Oscietra Gold caviar.

With tedious predictability, last year's uproar was just one among many ongoing, complex conversations about the role and categorisation of gender in the restaurant community, both in London and beyond. Institutions like the Michelin Guide have a historically poor record of recognising great female chefs for just being, well, chefs. And let's not forget the World's 50 Best's habit of first othering women by awarding them the controversial title of World's Best Female Chef, then cutting these same 'winners' off from their peers by failing to include their restaurants in the complete list.
