Reviews Summary

The Clove Club is celebrated for its innovative, Michelin-starred modern British cuisine and impeccable service in a relaxed Shoreditch Town Hall setting. Diners rave about creative tasting menus, particularly highlights like the Orkney scallop and buttermilk fried chicken. While the atmosphere is generally praised, some find the noise level to be a minor drawback.

"The Clove Club, situated in the historic Shoreditch Town Hall in London, has firmly established itself as a beacon of modern British cuisine. Since its inception, it has garnered significant acclaim, including a Michelin star in its first year and a second star thereafter, reflecting its commitment to excellence.

Ambience and Setting

Housed within the Grade II-listed Shoreditch Town Hall, The Clove Club exudes a minimalist yet welcoming atmosphere. The dining area is characterized by high ceilings and large windows, creating an airy environment that complements its open kitchen design. This layout allows diners to observe the meticulous preparation of their meals, fostering a sense of connection between the kitchen and the dining experience. The absence of traditional tablecloths and the presence of azure-tiled kitchen accents contribute to a relaxed yet refined setting.

Culinary Experience

Under the guidance of chef Isaac McHale, The Clove Club offers tasting menus that highlight seasonal British ingredients with innovative flair. Dishes such as buttermilk fried chicken, marinated in buttermilk for 24 hours and fried using tapioca and polenta flours, have been lauded for their exceptional flavor and texture . Another standout is the smoked wild Irish char paired with sour cream and rye, noted for its delicate balance and subtle smokiness .

The restaurant's commitment to showcasing British produce is evident in its menu selections. For instance, dishes featuring white asparagus, monkfish, chicken, and Aylesbury duck are prepared with precision, though some critics have expressed a desire for more luxurious ingredients at this price point .

Service and Hospitality

The service at The Clove Club is often described as attentive and knowledgeable. Staff members, including sommeliers, are praised for their expertise and friendly demeanor. However, there have been instances where service missteps occurred, such as a venison sausage rolling off the grill and into a diner's lap, with the staff appearing flustered in their response . Overall, the service is generally well-received, contributing positively to the dining experience.

Beverage Pairings

The Clove Club offers wine pairings that are both unusual and interesting, enhancing the overall dining experience . Additionally, the restaurant provides tea pairings, though some diners have noted that the teas presented had a similar, weak profile, lacking the robustness expected from their descriptions .

Value and Pricing

Dining at The Clove Club is a premium experience, with tasting menus priced accordingly. Some patrons have expressed concerns regarding the value, particularly in relation to the luxury of ingredients used . Nevertheless, many diners find the innovative cuisine and overall experience to be worth the investment.

Conclusion

The Clove Club stands as a testament to modern British gastronomy, offering a dining experience that combines innovative cuisine with a relaxed yet refined atmosphere. While certain aspects, such as ingredient selection and beverage pairings, have received mixed feedback, the restaurant's commitment to showcasing seasonal British produce and delivering attentive service continues to attract both local and international patrons."

"Had the best birthday dinner here.
I have been to many fine dining places before as a former New Yorker and The Clove Club topped a lot of the previous experiences I had.

All dish were experimental and creative but very well balanced in every aspect. There are some dishes with flavors and textures I've never tasted. Overall exquisite!
The service and hospitality was also exceptional. I would definitely recommend The Clove Club to my friends and would love to come back!!! Thank you for completing my perfect birthday celebration."

Kathy K

"A lovely tasting menu with a few surprises along the way. The extra course of Scottish blue shell lobster was the most memorable, especially the curly noodles in lobster bisque in the 2nd serving. The portion size with the extra course was good. In fact, most dishes were quite small and light, although understandable for a summer menu, the overall portion could be more generous throughout. The restaurant was situated inside the Shoreditch Town Hall but the interior design was not able to capture the classic elegance of the original architecture. It was more or less a typical London restaurant establishment. Service was prompt and friendly, with a minor error on the bill in the end that the more experienced server admitted the mistake right away and took it to rectify."

27 Best Restaurants in London Right Now

From the World’s 50 Best list, the Clove Club has come of age after starting out in the '00s as a Dalston supper club. These days it’s set behind a glossy blue door in Shoreditch’s stately old town hall, with a polished, low-lit bar, and pared-back dining room, where the best views are of chef Isaac McHale’s buzzing, blue-tiled kitchen. Fuss and frills are out but the elaborate tasting menu is dizzyingly ambitious—though, unlike some Michelin-starred joints, they’re not averse to serving fried chicken.

The Clove Club wears its numerous accolades lightly, with none of the bluff and bluster of other highfalutin establishments. With two Michelin stars to its name (the first awarded in 2014, the second in 2022), the multi-course tasting menu spans the tastiest, prettiest and most seasonal stuff from across the British Isles. Bashing out more hits than ABBA, the food is furiously fish-heavy, with the likes of sardine sashimi, scallops in dashi, and grilled tuna belly.

Best Fine Dining Restaurants In London 2024

Chef Isaac McHale’s philosophy is reinventing modern British,’ which has earned him and front-of-house business partner Johnny Smith the highest ranking for a UK restaurant in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list 2019. Having trained at Noma, Eleven Madison Park, and The Ledbury, he incorporates elements of each into his cooking, which focuses on British ingredients prepared simply and elegantly. Indeed, the signature Orkney scallop, Périgord truffle, hazelnut, as well as mandarin are available on both the six- and ten-course tasting menus, and it is quickly followed by Parten Bree, a Scottish spider crab hot pot that is McHale’s modern take on a traditional Scottish soup.
