Reviews Summary
The Rising Sun offers a unique stay in a historic 14th-century inn with stunning harbour views and classic British cuisine. Guests praise the attentive staff, delicious food, and charming atmosphere, though some mention occasional issues with menu limitations or minor restoration needs.
"The staff were so attentive at all times and accommodated our Boxer dog Doris with great enthusiasm. The breakfast and dinner was exceptional and everyone was so friendly. Our room was beautifully clean and provided all the amenities required for a 2 night stay. The actual building is so full of history and character, although we did feel that parts of the communal areas would benefit from some considerate restorations. Overall, we had the most fabulous stay at The Rising Sun and will be booking to stay again soon."
Bernard Gallyot
"Fabulous old pub in amazing location. We ate here without knowing a Master Chef winner was cooking, so we judged the food accordingly. We all loved the Soft Shell Crab and Turbot though my wife thought the lamb was a little bit chewy. Taste however could not be faulted. Another Scallop would have justified the price 3 small one for £15 seemed a bit steep, they were delicious though. Definitely worth a visit and the addition expense."
Steve Meggs
"Excellent location for us finishing our 9 day hike on the Two Moorsway. Room clean and comfortable with great view of harbour. Customer lounge also a really nice area. Food we had in the evening and breakfast was really good and the staff were very attentive. Restaurant just needs a little deeper clean in the corners and places like the chair legs but wouldn't put me off coming again."

24-Hour Room Service: The Rising Sun, Lynmouth, Devon
All would have stayed at the Rising Sun Hotel, a thatched 14th-century smugglers' inn that has had a 21st-century makeover by a London designer. In fact, several chapters of Lorna Doone were written in one of its rooms, while Percy and Harriet are reputed to have stayed in a cottage attached to the hotel, now named after the poet, which has its own sitting room and private garden. The views from here are pretty spectacular, but you can do even better, by riding to the top of the cliff in Lynmouth's curious water-powered funicular railway.

Riverside Cottage, Bed and Breakfast in Lynmouth
We stayed at the Riverside Cottage B & B in Lynmouth. The B & B was very relaxed, the food was excellent,.We would definitely recommend this establishment.Unfortunately we were never back in time from our beautiful River walks to have lunch or a coffee & cake in the Cafe that was run by the same people, we would have liked to sample some of the food on the menu.We had our evening meal in the Rising Sun just along the road, the ambiance was very homely, & the food & service was very good,
Devon's Best Outdoor Eating
Overlooking Lynmouth harbour, with dramatic views of Lynmouth Bay and Exmoor National Park, this 14th-century thatched smugglers’ inn is in one of Devon’s most picturesque locations. Inside, it’s wonderfully rickety and rambling, with a fire-lit bar, Exmoor cask ales, award-winning food and genial locals. It’s no wonder RD Blackmore felt compelled to write several chapters of his West Country classic, Lorna Doone, here.
Dog Friendly Hotels around Exmoor
With plenty of Olde Worlde charm, the historic Rising Sun dates from the 14th century and boasts a connection to R D Blackmore’s famous novel, Lorna Doone. It features its own restaurant which specialises in classic British cuisine, and a period atmosphere modern hotels cannot match. Paws Policy: Has a select number of rooms able to take dogs, so advance request is needed when booking (as should always be the case).
