What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Diners praise the Heart of Northumberland for its friendly atmosphere, excellent service, and delicious pub classics like the Sunday roast and fish and chips. The cozy ambiance with a real fire is a notable draw. However, some guests have experienced disappointing service with long waits and issues with food quality and portion sizes, particularly regarding the Sunday roast.
"What a lovely pub we stumbled on, on a short stop at Hexham. V friendly landlady, some great ales - I had Wainwright (Lake District), hubby had Wagtail. We had soft bread baps, mine with absolute melt in the mouth beef and 'proper gravy', 😋 the boys had Hexham sausage. All very delicious. Recommend!
All ages were supping there, families, older folk."

"Popped in for a drink and returned a couple of days later for food. Really welcoming and friendly staff. Food was good and reasonably priced."

"I came for dinner on a quiet midweek night and was really looking forward to trying The Heart of Northumberland. The pub itself has a lovely, traditional feel—cosy lighting, relaxed atmosphere, and friendly staff.
I ordered the seared beef medallions, which were beautifully cooked - tender, full of flavour, and nicely presented. The portion was generous and the accompanying sides were well done too.
The food was definitely the highlight of the evening. Unfortunately, the overall experience was let down by the lack of cleanliness. Despite it being a quiet night, the floor around my table was messy with crumbs and food debris. However, the table have been wiped properly before I was seated. I also had to visit the toilets, they were quite alright.
This visit honestly made me question how the pub has passed its hygiene inspection, because it didn’t feel up to standard.
It's a shame, as the kitchen clearly has talent and the staff were welcoming. With better attention to cleanliness and upkeep, this could be a fantastic spot. I might return, but only if I hear they’ve improved the hygiene side of things.
I always try to find more positive moments but remain objective. Hopefully I'll find the Heart of Northumberland in much better state next time."

Discovering Hexham's Restaurants
This is a classic, British country pub, with exposed brick, comfy leather sofas, an open fire and a whole range of craft beers. Apparently, it used to be a really rough pub, with sticky carpets and grimy corners, but it has been totally transformed. Here, we tried a whole host of incredible food from the seasonally changing menu and I’ve got to say, this was my favourite stop on the tour.
Doggie Pubs | Find out where you and your best friend are welcome
We visited Hexham while on holiday with our Labrador, this pub attracted us as it had a water bowl and chalkboard sign outside saying they welcome dogs. We got the impression that we were welcome to sit anywhere but chose to sit inside in a spacious back bar but there is also a garden at the back of the pub. The staff were welcoming and the food delicious.

Great little pub, with good food, great selection of beers and friendly attentive staff, a roaring fire and dog friendly. Dropped one star on food as meals were served with fries not chips. Will definitely be visiting next time we are in Hexham.
