Reviews Summary

Mother India's Cafe is highly praised for its innovative Indian tapas concept, delicious and fragrant curries, and the fresh, flavorful naan bread. Diners appreciate the cozy ambiance and attentive service, making it a great spot for both casual lunches and romantic dinners. However, some reviews mention that while the food is amazing, the service can sometimes feel less welcoming, with a suggestion to hire more staff to manage the popularity.

"Delicious lamb chops, peshwari naan and tikka masala (i only had the gravy, and that was delicious too!). Lovely staff who accommodated my requests. Highly recommend. Perfect way to spend an afternoon after visiting the Kelvingrove Art gallery just opposite."

"Delicious fragrant curries

Came here with a couple of friends, it was a little spendy, but the depth of flavour in the curry we had was top tier.

I ordered a chicken madras, asked for proper spicy, but got white boy spicy nonetheless... ah well. it was really tasty though 8/10

Naans were great, fresh and tasty, paired perfectly with the curries."

Edward Spencer

"We got a couple things to share between two of us which is always the best way to eat Indian food! To start we got some spiced onions and popadoms (obvs) and also chicken pakora and some cauliflower pakora which was a special. All of this was soooo delicious. I’m not really a cauliflower person but there’s something about cauliflower pakora that’s just so good!

Then for our main we shared a veg Thali tray which was a Tuesday special and only £10.95! We went for Channa Daal, Aloo Gobi, rice, chapati, raita, and salad. We also got a garlic chilli chicken and some extra rice.

Again, everything was absolutely perfect, full of flavour and nice portion sizes to be able to try a bit of everything. I would definitely go back as everything was top notch and it was super affordable as well!"

Glasgow's best Indian restaurants - Restaurants

Mother India now forms a mini-empire of outlets in Glasgow and Edinburgh including the original restaurant on Westminster Terrace in Glasgow's West End – see their website for details – so it might be a little controversial to pick its nearby café as the leading exponent of its craft. What the café does however is offer the ideal way to enjoy Indian food: small, tapas-like dishes that you can share with your dining companions, or the chance to try several different flavours even though you're eating solo.Sitting directly opposite Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the premises have simple décor, mildly ironic wallpaper and a bustling feel when busy. A typical selection of dishes might bring South Indian ginger lamb with coconut and tamarind, some reassuring chicken pakora, chilli fish cakes and perhaps a simple naan on the side.

The brand known as Mother India really covers four adjacent restaurants rather than just one location, all highlighting small plates of impressive Indian cuisine. What makes this place across from Kelvingrove Art Gallery so popular is the combination of high-quality cooking and an extensive range of tastes, from the vegetarian dal to spicy ginger chicken. The style is casual, although the interior is an opulent mix of dark wood, heavy cloth napkins, and luxury silverware.

I have been meaning to visit the Edinburgh cafe for a while. How fortuitous it was and delighted was I when a colleague suggested our team go for a meal there after work.
