You should definitely book a table at Marley’s because a) you probably won’t get a table if you just turn up; and b) your table will be reserved with your name spelt out in Scrabble tiles and that is just the best thing ever. You also definitely need to eat breakfast in this cosy yet stylish bistro (although breakfast is walk-in only, so you won’t get the Scrabble tiles, sniff) because that involves vegan bacon (supplied by fabulous local business Sister Seitan), plum tomatoes, mushroom, beans, grilled courgette and aubergine and a homemade crispy hash brown.

To be fair (although that pompous man can still piss off), there were probably other more deserving restaurants, cafes and bistros in Folkestone, with a wider offering of vegan food, but I wanted to include Marleys because a) they do a vegan fry-up with vegan bacon (again, from Sister Seitan) and I haven’t seen that anywhere else ever (to be fair again though, I haven’t exactly travelled extensively); b) they use Scrabble tiles spelt out in your name to reserve your table; and c) it’s my article and I’ll include who I damn well want.

Heading back into town there’s a raft of independent spots, such as long-time stalwart El Cortador serving classic tapas and sherry, or homemade breakfast crumpets at all-day venue Marleys. The Folkestone Wine Company is the restaurant anyone would love as their local, run by Dave Hart and Polly Pleasance, knocking out gems of wild seabass, saffron and chickpeas, or it could be rump of lamb with onion sauce ­– it’s tiny, cosy, and a favourite of chef Angela Harnett who raves about the crème brûlée.

The high street and the Old High Street also have some of my favourite spots like Folklore - a good bet for a coffee or a £5 cocktail on a Wednesday night - or Marleys - a restaurant serving up dishes with Kentish products and at affordable prices. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, the food is really good regardless of the day or the time. I also like to pop in just for a drink and love loveeee their sparkling Kentish white wine Bacchus.

Other popular choices include Aspendos Turkish restaurant, Marleys, El Cortador tapas, Annapurna Nepalese restaurant, Steep Street Coffee House and Pickup Pintxos. Plant-based restaurant Dr Legumes, based in a converted shipping container in the harbour car park, is a Community Interest Company, serving great food in a stylish setting. And another highlight has to be the Leas Lift Café, which opened at the end of 2020.

Marleys at the bottom of The Old High Street, is one of the restaurants that offers Docker sourdough as your bread option. The breakfasts in this lovely Kentish restaurant are ready to set you up for the day and the vegan plate is bursting with flavour. There’s homemade seitan patties, sweet potato humus, field mushrooms, tomatoes, crispy potatoes.

It's hard to choose, but Marleys is currently offering a great range of light and healthy lunch options. This independent restaurant, run by local couple Mark and Charly, is located close to Rocksalt at the bottom of the Old High Street and certainly worth checking out. This popular all-day diner has just moved to bigger premises where it serves up a farm-to-table menu of hits featuring local produce. So there might be Romney Marsh lamb chops on the menu alongside pork with Kentish cider gravy. Sharing boards do particularly well including the Garden of England vegan option.

Food was divine, portions generous, gluten free options for my husband, the decor, atmosphere and music absolutely spot on and the staff super lovely, kind and attentive. Not surprised there was a little wait for the table, so worth it in their designated comfy area.

The favourite for many amongst the locals and tourists is the wonderous Marley's. A typical British restaurant serves up quality and freshly-cooked food using local produce. Everything I've eaten here the multiple times I've visited has been heavenly.

It's not for nothing that the restaurant has received many awards. A reservation seems to be mandatory, otherwise it will be difficult to get a place. The service is very nice and attentive, the atmosphere is very pleasant.

A charming restaurant on the Old High Street and owned by the cutest couple in Kent. While I’m mostly vegan these days, I’m still a little obsessed with halloumi burgers. They make one of the best in Folkestone.

Best food in general: Marley’s on the Old High Street is fantastic, with local, seasonal food. The Folkestone Wine Company is also very popular, and highly rated by Grace Dent.
