"This place is a must any time I visit Edinburgh. It certainly isn’t cheap, good stuff will set you back a fair bit. But truth is, you get what you pay for.
The range of produce and quality of it is exceptional. And the service is top notch. Tends to be the first place I go after arriving at Waverley station!"

"The menu here is seasonal, which can be a hit or miss depending on what you’re expecting.
The restaurant is tucked away at the back of the deli and was fairly quiet during our lunchtime visit. We had come based on the menu we saw online, only to find that it had completely changed - not a problem at all but something to be aware of before visiting.
We ordered a range of dishes to sample a bit of everything: Salmone to start, Crab Linguine, Mushroom Tagliolini, Mozzarella Penetella (toasted sandwich), Torta di Polenta and Torta di Limone.
Unfortunately, the Crab Linguine was underwhelming - the flavours didn’t come through and it had very little crab. The Torta di Limone also felt overpriced for the portion size. In contrast, the Torta di Polenta offered much better value, both in taste and size.
The highlights for us were the Mushroom Tagliolini and the Mozzarella Penetella, both full of flavour and well-executed. That said, while there were a couple of standout dishes, I wouldn’t go out of my way to return"

"Wonderful place. Our 3rd time here and couldn’t ever leave less than a 5 star review. Today simply had a pain au chocolat and a cafetière of coffee but both were as special as usual. Could not fault this place. And could never come back to Edinburgh without returning here. I would advise booking in advance as it’s very popular. And rightly so."

The best Italian restaurants in Edinburgh
Part of Valvona & Crolla’s burgeoning foodie stable, VinCaffe has long proved a tasty addition to Scotland’s oldest deli and Italian wine merchants. A sister outfit to the original Valvona & Crolla shop and café on Elm Row, this family-run affair is all about the produce, from their own bakery made bread to their own brand olive oil. The antipasto plates with a glass V&C’s own excellent fizz or wine selection are a great shout – the Tagliere di Manzo (wafer thin slices of Aberdeen Angus fillet) coming highly recommended.
The best shops in Edinburgh
Scotland’s oldest Italian delicatessen dates from when most Scots bought olive oil in small bottles with droppers from the chemist. It’s a wine merchant as well, with a good café/bar hidden at the back. But the deli remains essentially unchanged, with meats, cheeses, olives and all manner of other good things behind the counter and hanging from the ceiling, while old-fashioned grocer’s shelves are packed with cans, jars, bottles and packets of every description.

It’s a bit out of the way down Leith Walk” and “you have to go into the shop to find it”, but it’s “worth a detour” to discover the café behind this “Edinburgh legend” – a deli and wine merchant that’s been going strong since 1934, and where diners profit from a truly miniscule (£6) corkage fee on any of the fine wines available in the store. Good Bakeries in Edinburgh, Scotland
Valvona and Crolla, an Italian Delicatessen with a long history, are responsible for my idea of what sourdough bread should taste like. Their sourdough loaves are sour in a way nothing else I've tasted has been, and on a good day their bread is unbelievably tasty and addictive. Unlike the other two I recommend, the crumb of these loaves tends to be quite dense, but when the bread is also soft, in combination with the sour flavour it just makes it all the more addictive.
