Spry is one of the newest and sleekest wine bars in the capital, with an interior that feels like an art gallery. It has a big focus on natural wines, while the food primarily uses Scottish ingredients.

When Spry opened, it felt like a wee bit of London’s Shoreditch had been picked up by a UFO and transported eight hours north. Several years and a pandemic later, the natural wine bar has earned its spurs and then some. Its latest range of small plates to accompany its imaginative selection of bottles is a winning combination, and its refreshing stripped-back vibe is the ideal contrast to the nearby £1 billion St James Quarter upmarket shopping centre.

It’s in a beautiful old stone building and it’s been done out in a gorgeous, minimal, Scandinavian style. The selection leans more towards natural wines and they’ve got a constantly rotating menu of wines by the glass: sparkling, orange, red, rosé and white, which means it’s a great place to pop in for a quick drink. Their small plates are amazing, too – don’t miss the homemade beef jerky.

Behind its Georgian façade, Spry is every inch the modern wine bar: a serene, minimalist space specialising in natural wines, whose short produce-led menu delivers deliciousness in dishes of Tamworth pork, chicken mousse and cauliflower; or nettle ravioli, hazelnut and wasabina leaf. Local foodies also treasure Spry’s basement coffee shop, café and bakery, Ante.

At the city-centre end of Leith Walk, Spry is in a handsome Georgian house. Owners Matt and Marzena have a coffee shop and bakery in the basement, but it’s the ground-floor you need if you want their wine bar and bottle shop. The focus is on natural and organic wines – there’s a rotating selection of ten offered by the glass – and good food to go with them.

Spry Wines is the new kid on the block, but don’t let that fool you. They’ve got this edgy, minimalist vibe that says, “Yeah, we know our wine is good.” And trust me, it really is.
