This is the bistro we all wish we had around the corner: cosy (six tables and six seats at the bar), calming (all sea green and deep Pacific blue with a soothing view of the Meadows) and affordable. A half a roasted lobster with chimichurri and chips is wildly tempting, but how about slow cooked beef brisket with pommes Anna, or halibut, fennel, blood orange and new potato to celebrate the advent of spring?. Vegetarian options like sumac roasted hispi cabbage, dukkah and chickpea dhal are no one’s idea of a poor relation, either.

Overlooking the wide-open greenery of the Bruntsfield Links, Leftfield is a relaxed and friendly neighborhood bistro that specializes in fresh seafood and locally sourced ingredients. Try the natural Cumbrae oysters, Shetland mussels, or crispy squid with sriracha mayo, lime, and coriander to start. To follow, opt for something like the delicious red mullet served with steamed sesame rice, gochujang, eggplant, and pickled ginger, or the chargrilled octopus with romesco and baby potatoes.

However, we’ve been drawn to several other venues, notably Leftfield on Barclay Terrace – a cracking seafood specialist that sets out its stall as a neighbourhood bistro that hums with vitality and chatter. This year’s top billing in Scotland, however, goes to Fin & Grape in Edinburgh’s Bruntsfield district; here is another fish restaurant performing as a bistro, but we feel this place has the edge on its competitors by virtue of its flawlessly executed cooking. There’s even a broody little wine bar in the basement.

Rachel Chisholm and Phil White’s understated (mainly seafood) bistro is a gem: local, ethical and independent. On a quiet corner overlooking Bruntsfield Links (over the window boxes) between Tollcross and the Bruntsfield food belt, you feel like you’re in their living room: sourcing from local suppliers (the oysters from Cumbrae), organic wine from small producers.

One for when you need a break from the madness, Leftfield is a haven of a restaurant with gorgeous seafood dishes, an exciting wine list and beautiful views over Bruntsfield Links and the Meadows. I had been longing to visit Leftfield ever since I had one of their sell-out seafood platters at home during lockdown. So, with a looming birthday celebration for two discerning, seafood-loving friends on the horizon, it was my restaurant of choice for a celebratory lunch for four.

Leftfield is the perfect neighbourhood bistro, and will provide a welcome balm after a long day of shows. Cosy, elegant and welcoming, with enviable views over Bruntsfield Links, this family run restaurant never fails to charm.
