Reviews Summary

The Cornish Arms is celebrated for its high-quality gastropub fare, impeccable service, and cozy atmosphere, making it a top choice for locals and visitors alike. While many praise the refined dishes and attentive staff, some reviews mention occasional inconsistencies in food temperature or portioning, and one diner found the tap water pricing steep.

"I've been here a couple of times now and both times were great experiences. The latest meal (for four of us) was excellent, all of us had different dishes and all were good. The service is attentive but sensible. The atmosphere is good, a gentle buzz with plenty of diners even though we sat down really early (6pm on a Wednesday out of season). Not cheap, but very good value still. We'd come back for sure."

Phil Davis

"Stayed overnight at the Cornish Arms have there own car park and rear of pub. Rooms are good size and well furnished, well equipped modern bathroom with walk in rainfall shower. Only downside is WiFi a little lacking keeps on dropping out. We ate in the restaurant and the food was really very good and the service was top notch. The included breakfast was not massive but very good quality and again service was excellent. So all in all a really great place would definitely stay there again."

James Turner

"Fantastic place to eat. Wonderful food (and wine and soft drinks). Great service. Lovely atmosphere.

For those interested, they have a separate vegan menu and some of the best vegan food I’ve ever had. My partner said the regular menu was also excellent."

10 of the best Gastropubs in Devon

This pub was once your standard weekend boozer, but a complete overhaul back in 2013 by St Austell Brewery transformed the Cornish Arms into an airy, sophisticated gastropub with an emphasis on offering the best of everything; a menu that ranges from simple dishes like ham, egg and chips to more elaborate fare like roasted duck with confit leg raviolo, a fantastic range of drinks on tap and the best in customer service. The pub has featured repeated in the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs list (like many on our list) and makes a visit to the pretty moorland town of Tavistock even more appealing.

The Cornish Arms makes one of the best Sunday roasts in Tavistock. Chicken or beef is served alongside individual plates of cauliflower cheese, red cabbage, roast potatoes and seasonal veg, while generous portions of desserts – like sticky toffee pudding, apple and pear soufflé, and dark chocolate delice – are not to be missed. Popular with families, the restaurant has a buzzing atmosphere, particularly in the beer garden which overlooks a babbling brook.
