Chester’s speciality coffee scene has been steadily growing over the last few years, particularly right in the city centre, along the twin axes of Bridge and Watergate Streets. Taking the second of these, Watergate Street has seen the likes of Chalk Coffee (2018) and Panna Chester (2019) opening in recent years, but predating them both, and somewhat unnoticed by me (my bad) is today’s Coffee Spot, The Flower Cup, which opened in 2016, putting it amongst Chester’s speciality coffee veterans. Unusually for a city where coffee shops seem to specialise in the basement-like spaces under the Rows, The Flower Cup is on the upper floor on the south side of the street.

This popular spot on the historic Watergate Row level of shops trades in vibrant brunch-style dishes beneath trailing plants, green vines and swinging pendant lamps strung from the ceiling – think stacks of pancakes dripping in syrup, all-frills fry-ups, and smoked salmon and avo. Smooth coffee topped with intricate latte art is one of its trump cards, though there are plenty of teas, sourced from Holmes Chapel's Tea from the Manor. If you like your breakfasts sweet, go for the Biscoff French toast – a meltingly oozy pile of cinnamon French toast with Biscoff and chocolate ice cream.

The Flower Cup is an independent botanical coffee shop, they serve up a variety of brunch dishes on their vegan menu from a full vegan breakfast to a breakfast bap, you can even try Shakshuka a popular North African dish, as well as a variety of teas and speciality coffee. All of this can be enjoyed while surrounded by plants and flowers. The coffee used is all ethically sourced by Neighbourhood Coffee and teas are all sourced locally to ensure they are as sustainable as possible.

A botanical haven awaits when you step through the door of The Flower Cup, off the famous Watergate Row, one of Chester’s most popular coffee and brunch spots. No pre-bookings are taken here so ensure you arrive at the start of service to guarantee a table or be prepared to queue out the door waiting for a space. Complete with neutral hues, plants a plenty and a super cool vibe, it is easy to why so many head to this hidden gem in Chester city centre for a long, lazy brunch.

A cute little botanical coffee shop situated on the infamous Chester Rows, The Flower Cup is literally overflowing with charming green plants and delicious vegan options!. When Vegan Deva and the Jaunty Goat are packed with customers, this is another great vegan-friendly cafe I go to when I need to work. They have a separate vegan menu that changes seasonally (which is great for sustainability!), as well as an array of loose teas and coffee drinks.

For a delicious brunch while seated among botanicals, head to The Flower Cup located on the upper level of Watergate Row, close to the pretty pink Palm Eatery and Panna Coffee, both also worth a visit. While at the Flowercup, be sure to try the pancake or French toast Special for a sugary sweet kick or the tasty Vegan fry up. After a relaxing chance to refuel, the possibilities for an enjoyable day spent discovering the Chester Rows, are endless.

My next choice is best if we’re in Chester on a weekday because there are often queues to get in at the weekends (another café that doesn’t take bookings – walk-ins only). The Flower Cup is up in Watergate Row so it’s a bit harder to find than the others – but definitely worth the effort!

Let’s sojourn in a place where wagging tails and happy barks are more than welcome. The cozy and all-embracing outlook of most of the Chester hotels and cottages will make you and your canine partner feel right at home. The hotel’s rooms are designed to make a room within a room for your pooch.

An independent coffee shop located in the city centre, not far east of Chester Racecourse, The Flower Cup specialise in hot drinks and their all-day brunch, served up in friendly – and decidedly floral – surroundings. If you are lucky, they may even have a pop-up florists or plant sale.

This plant-garlanded café is hidden away in one of Chester’s famous Rows (covered walkways on top of the street-level shops). You might come for the fiery tofu hash or pillowy blueberry pancakes, but you’ll probably leave with a cactus or funky pot from sister shop, The Violet Palm.

Flower Cup isn’t fully plant-based but they have a nice selection of sweet and savoury vegan breakfast items. I had the pancakes there which were delicious, but next time I’d love to try the vegan French toast. If you love plants, you will find that this spot is the cutest in town.

The owner of this coffee shop adores plants – they’re everywhere!. Specialising in all-day brunches, I had a vegan breakfast of mushrooms, sausage, avocado, tomatoes, beans and toast (£9). I couldn’t resist finishing with a banana and coconut milk pancake (£7.75).

One of the most promising and upcoming businesses of Chester’s independent scene, we absolutely adore The Flower Cup on the Bridge Street Row. Their recently launched all-day brunch menu is to die for – with plenty of vegan and vegetarian options too.

Haven’t tried Opera Grill but fingers crossed for you that it is good. I second Mad Hatters cafe on Bridge St if you fancy coffee or lunch in the day. It just round the corner from Opera Grill and it does he most amazing cupcakes.

This botanical coffee shop located on the historic rows on Watergate Street is an Instagrammer’s favourite with their planet-themed decor, neon signs and their delicious (and very photogenic!) brunch options.

With craft stalls and eateries inside it makes for a perfect evening or few hours. You have to try the Market Café - they do the best tiramisu doughnuts!
