We were not far from the truth, because French Protestants who fled their lands because of religious persecution have lived here. Today it is a restaurant where you can sit in a relaxed atmosphere in the courtyard around the water, right next to the mooring boats…

Luckily we remembered The Old Weavers restaurant in town which serves pies and roast dinners in one of the high street’s oldest buildings. It is black and white fronted and located right next to the River Stour, with an outdoor seating area at the back of the building that overlooks the river. We booked a table for 6:45pm on the Wednesday that she arrived, but fortunately for us the restaurant was quite flexible and we could get an outside table a little earlier than that.

This charming 16th-century building sits right on the river and serves up all your cosy pub lunch faves. Come here for a hearty serving of fish & chips, pies, and sticky toffee pudding, all with a view of punters floating past. For a glimpse into Canterbury’s past, look out for the historic Ducking Stool near King’s Bridge by the Old Weavers’ House. This stool holds a supposed dark history, as it is said it was used as a test for witches. The belief was that if someone dunked underwater for a few minutes and survived, they were a witch!.

It's a restaurant in a small tourist old town on the main drag. It seemed quite popular and réservations are recommended. I had the pepper steak and fries.
