Reviews Summary

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn is praised for its historic atmosphere and some delicious dishes, particularly pies. However, guests have noted issues with food availability, inconsistent service, and occasionally disappointing food quality. While the traditional pub ambiance is a draw, some visitors have experienced negative interactions with staff.

"Between adult us we had four different main meals, one side order & one pudding on 2 different occasions recently. The Chicken & Ham Hock pie was very tasty & moist. The "Famous" pie was also good though I struggled to find the bacon & black pudding. The Sunday Roast was superb apart from the bland mashed potato. The big burger was very good & filling. Elsewhere the garlic bread was tasty but the bread & butter pudding special lacked flavour but was a generous portion. All in all I wouldn't hesitate to eat & drink there again. The surroundings are homely & clean. I love the Laurel & Hardy pictures in the toilets. The ale is well kept & the staff are friendly & efficient, particularly the hard working Landlady & young waitress. It has it's own car park opposite."

"Went for lunch here today and the food and staff were wonderful. Food was amazing and not expensive, especially the steak and ale pie and hot roast pork roll!!!!! Staff were so lovely and friendly, well worth the visit! We all had a great time!"

Louise Skinner

"This pub knows how to serve excellent food!
The menu is full of classic pub dishes but from our experience, it all appears freshly coked, very homely. The steak and ale pie - amazing. The chips blew me away. They were so brown - burnt in appearance. But they were cooked to perfection, no idea what gave them that colour but they weren’t overcooked at all! Delicious. The ploughman’s board - high quality. Coleslaw was definitely freshly made. It was a perfect lunch after our 3-hour hike."

‘Prettiest’ place to see autumn leaves in UK is ‘magical’ secret village

There are both archaeology and geology displays worth a look at as well as a carved head which is believed to be the symbol of a god the local Iron Age tribe may have worshipped. However, no classic English countryside village is complete without a cosy pub to relax in after a long day of seeing the sights, and in Castleton, there are six drinking spots to choose from despite the small size of the village. There is Ye Olde Nags Head, the Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn, the Bulls Head, the George as well as teashops, specialist shops and beautiful hotels set in historic buildings, so there is always something to do in this brilliant little village.

Tradition is everything at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn, a Castleton alehouse set in a timbered, 17th-century coach house on the town’s main road. As traditional as it may be, the pub’s menu has a few twists, such as spicy chorizo-topped burgers and a wild boar casserole, best accompanied by award-winning cask ales such as Silk of Amnesia. If you don’t want to leave, they’ve got 10 comfy rooms upstairs (How Ln; mains from £8.50).

Best Nightlife in Dove Holes

This traditional country pub is bursting with character, exuding welcoming vibes from every mellow stone of its attractive exterior. Its endearing name has interesting origins, dating back to when it was an overnight stopover on the salt carrying route which once ran from Cheshire across the Pennines to Yorkshire. Accommodation was provided in return for cheese, the original hooks for which can still be seen in the lower room.
