Urban Reef sounds like a Nineties tribute band, but it’s an absolutely canonical beachfront bar-bistro: a takeaway and deli on the ground floor; a lovely, lofty glass-fronted, wood-lined space above, with a sort of minstrels’ gallery above that; a pretty terrace decked with brightly enamelled metal furniture out in front (this was closed on our visit because of the wind). It’s ever so slightly scruffy – the sea air has taken the shine off some of the surfaces – but it’s certainly got style.

Urban Reef offers a unique opportunity to enjoy some of the best in Dorset cuisine, right on the seafront. This idyllic setting offers a breathtaking panorama of both Bournemouth Bay and Boscombe Promenade – some of the most spectacular sights in the county. The menu aims to showcase the best of Dorset cuisine, and diners can enjoy regional delicacies such as Dorset rock oysters and Cornish mussels as they gaze out onto the natural landscape from which their meal has been sourced.

The location of Urban Reef is the closest you can get to the lapping waves before having an actual picnic. It is my favourite within a small, but lovingly nurtured, group of restaurants known as the Urban Guild. All about nourishing, sharing and embracing, it’s the perfect setting for breakfast, lunch and dinner in the sunshine (all of which can be ordered off of the dedicated vegan menu) and they work with as much local and seasonal produce as they can, so you know it’s fresh.

It was always a dream of Bournemouth local Mark Cribb to open up an oceanfront restaurant, and the hospitality and welcome you get as soon as you walk into Urban Reef shows that customers are really appreciated here. Customers aren’t hard to come by either considering the food is so good.

Urban Reef on the sea front by Boscombe Pier offer fabulous views whatever the weather, gorgeous interior and gluten free cakes. The kitchen is happy to accommodate special diets although Andrew is not too inspired by their vegetarian choices. The rest of us like the food choices but we can eat meat and fish too so easier to please us.

There are plenty of bars along the beach front, but one that I visit more than any other is Urban Reef. Right near Boscombe pier, it’s great for a beer in the sunshine and bite to eat for lunch.
