Reviews Summary

Urban Reef is celebrated for its stunning seafront location and consistently good food, particularly its burgers and fish and chips. The friendly and professional staff contribute to a welcoming atmosphere, though some diners have noted issues with ingredient quality on occasion and the availability of breakfast items.

"Right by the Boscombe seafront, this spot is for a quality food with a view. We stopped in on a chilly afternoon, so unfortunately couldn’t make the most of their sea-facing terrace, but even from indoors, the coastal charm was very much alive. The interior struck a lovely balance—modern, airy and full of vibrant tones, it felt relaxed and light-hearted, perfectly echoing the beachside vibe outside.

We tried the cheese toastie and the beef burger, and both dishes surpassed expectations. The toastie was a real comfort dish—oozing with mature, sharp cheddar, and grilled to a perfect golden crisp. The balance of crunch and creaminess was spot on, and the bread had that ideal tang of a well-fermented sourdough, elevating it beyond the everyday.

The burger was a highlight. The beef patty was clearly house-made, juicy, expertly cooked, and seasoned in a way that let the meat shine without being overpowering. The bun was soft yet structured, holding everything together nicely, and the garnish was fresh, simple and well-proportioned.

For a casual lunch by the sea, this place really hits the mark. We’ll definitely be back, hopefully next time for a long lunch in the sun on that gorgeous terrace."

"Two years on and still my favourite place to dine, there’s so many reasons I’m always here weekly. Firstly the staff are amazing, friendly, professional & always been greeted with a smile and the food consistently tastes really good. I’ve tried a lot and they’re always adding new stuff to the menu too (the chef & his teams are the best locally). A special thanks to Abby & Kaitlin for taking the time to understand my new allergies today due to medication and double checking ingredients for me. Also a big thank you Pedro & Roberto for having me as a local customer."

"This was a very positive experience. Location, drinks and serving staff made you feel like it was the place to be! An old guy troubled us at our table and we had difficulty shifting him, but a young member of staff gently moved him on. He was polite about it, so we reflected his actions in the tip!"

'The proper chips are properly good': Urban Reef, Bournemouth, restaurant review

Urban Reef sounds like a Nineties tribute band, but it’s an absolutely canonical beachfront bar-bistro: a takeaway and deli on the ground floor; a lovely, lofty glass-fronted, wood-lined space above, with a sort of minstrels’ gallery above that; a pretty terrace decked with brightly enamelled metal furniture out in front (this was closed on our visit because of the wind). It’s ever so slightly scruffy – the sea air has taken the shine off some of the surfaces – but it’s certainly got style.

A vegan's guide to Bournemouth

The location of Urban Reef is the closest you can get to the lapping waves before having an actual picnic. It is my favourite within a small, but lovingly nurtured, group of restaurants known as the Urban Guild. All about nourishing, sharing and embracing, it’s the perfect setting for breakfast, lunch and dinner in the sunshine (all of which can be ordered off of the dedicated vegan menu) and they work with as much local and seasonal produce as they can, so you know it’s fresh.
