What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Rick Stein, Sandbanks garners praise for its stunning sea views and a chic, Scandinavian-inspired ambiance. While many rave about the fresh seafood, particularly the platters and classic dishes like fish and chips, some diners have found certain dishes to be bland or overpriced for the quality. Service is generally good, with special mentions for attentive staff, though speed can sometimes be an issue during busy periods.
"We had the best lunch for our anniversary. It was a last minute decision while out walking. The food, drinks and that view was unbelievable. The hake and the crab linguine was so delicious. Went down really well with the vodka melon cocktails."

"I expected more from a Rick Stein restaurant.
The one in Padstow was excellent, this was not.
For the price paid and level of food expected it was severely disappointing to say the least.
We were a bit disappointed with the starters..my Mrs coconut prawns had no taste of coconut whatsoever.
My mackerel salad was mediocre.
We had the goan lobster and herb lobster for main , and whilst it seemed good value with a glass of champagne thrown in with the deal; they were both under seasoned and under spiced, and were bland at best.
The accompanying sides were worse than I’d expect at a 1 star restaurant though…presentation was severely lacking for the quality of restaurant this was advertising. The cucumber and lime salad was literally cucumber and some lime juice ( I take more care slicing cucumber evenly at home !) and the buttered potatoes were bland to say the least ( I put parsley or chives on at home). There seemed to be no love in the food preparation. This may be because we sat at 8.30 and it was late in the day , but this not excusable for a restaurant that sells itself as higher end.
On the plus side, our service from Luke was impeccable. Really good.
The atmosphere is great and the setting amazing.
Still, it didn’t detract from the bland food."

"Great location, nice and cosy inside. Could use a few less pillows on the seating so you can actually sit down. The food was amazing. I had the crab burger, I always live seeing crab as a choice on menus because it isn't very common. Stunning burger and desserts. Highly recommend."

Best restaurants in Dorset to book right now
With its stellar spot along the UK’s most expensive stretch of sand – one where footballers rub shoulders with espadrilled yachties and four-wheel-drives duck into dubiously designed mansions – Rick Stein’s suave seafood joint pulls in a lively Dorset and Hampshire crowd. The interiors are pared back and Scandi in style – a design palate cleanser before the fruits de mer theatre. And it’s really quite a show, opening with Brownsea Island oysters, salt-cod brandade or a simple and seriously delicious slice of warm Coombeshead sourdough – ‘a fine line between caramelised and burnt’.
Best Poole Restaurants - Reviews & Restaurant Guide
An “absolutely amazing” view over Poole Bay and Brownsea Island elevates a visit to this Rick Stein group outpost. This is a much commented-on destination, and we’ve rated it positively on the good volume of praise for its fish and seafood, which hails “food so consistently good, without frills from excellent ingredients in delicious combinations”. Given the “aspirations and expectations linked to the name” not everyone is convinced, though, and it’s more recommended as a good all-rounder for a fish supper with fab view attached than it is for next-level cooking.
Family-friendly places to eat in Poole with sea views
Many people are familiar with celebrity chef Rick Stein’s mastery of cooking a fishy on a dishy, and so his Sandbanks restaurants with a view was always going to be a hit. The restaurant is made up of an informal brasserie downstairs and a more lavish, white tablecloth dining area upstairs (both family-friendly), but only the upper floor restaurant has sea views. And Mr Stein sure has made the most of those beautiful views, with wall-to-wall glass windows running along one side, which gaze over Sandbanks bay and the boats bobbing on the waves.

Dorset foodie guide: best restaurants, cafes and bakeries
I routinely urge all Dorset-bound foodies to head West, and stay there, dodging the chains, the urban sprawl of Bournemouth and the architectural, and poor town planning of most of Poole. But Hamptons-inspired Sandbanks’ retirees, done-good types and footballers and their wives, quite rightly, deserve a really good restaurant. Somewhere worth a blow dry and nice shoes (the Superga-footed yachties sinking into the Scandi chairs are in for a sartorial treat).
