Opened in 2014 by former Saint Kitchen owner Geoff Lam, Faculty is on a mission to provide great coffee and allow customers to understand more about it. There’s no room for sofas or comfy chairs – this is a coffee-making laboratory, after all.

As soon as you step inside, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the dark wood and rustic brick furnishings, stretching from floor to ceiling and giving the entire coffee shop a retro atmosphere.

Faculty coffee is the perfect remote working location for those looking for something a little different. The tables are in the style of old-school writing desks, so you get to feel like you’re back in the classroom again (except there’s coffee). The cafe is also super conveniently located, just a short walk from Birmingham New Street Station making it the perfect spot for business meetings if you’ve travelled by train, or to kill some time before a meeting elsewhere.

This independent serves super strong coffee, cakes and pastries in a tiny shop in Piccadilly Arcade. It is cute and has great character but tables are as small as school desks so not ideal for any group office meetings but perfect for a laptop if you want to catch up on some work. Tucked away in Piccadilly Arcade, Faculty Coffee is an oasis amongst a sea of coffee chains. Often over-looked by recent arrivals into Grand Central, whose eyes are instantly drawn to Costa Coffee or Caffé Nero, Faculty Coffee is in fact one of the best coffee shop joints in the city centre. Beware – their strong coffee is not for the faint hearted, but you can guarantee to be served by proper, highly trained baristas.

This cult favourite coffee shop is known by coffee lovers for their amazing speciality brews as well as their delicious cakes and pastries, but they also now serve amazing brunch too. Available on Thursdays – Sundays until 2.30pm, you can expect the same high quality food to accompany your incredible coffee. One for the Hipsters can be found near New Street Station at Faculty Coffee. This is one of the newest coffee shops that has opened in the Second City, and has immediately become one of the best places to work from in Birmingham. One of the main reasons for that is down to the unique coffee and tea options that are served here, with an extremely friendly service.

It’s not hard to get a good cup of Joe in Birmingham, but if you’re looking for the pinnacle we’d suggest heading to Faculty, a stone’s throw away from New Street Station. The drawings on the wall show this is a place which takes its craft very seriously; the best in organic coffee, each with detailed flavour notes. Great line of cakes, too.
