An oasis of Middle Eastern hospitality in the bohemian suburb of Moseley, Damascena has won over Birmingham’s tastemakers and punters alike and now has five fabulous locations across the area. Coffee first came to us from the Middle East, and Damascena is the place to discover its roots. When it comes to lunch and dinner, classic shawarmas feature roast lamb or chicken wrapped up with garlic dressing and gherkins.

Though Damascena is more of a coffee house and delicatessen than a restaurant, it still deserves to be on the list!. One of Moseley‘s best eateries, Damascena is home to some of the tastiest Middle Eastern food in the city. Whether you’re after a lamb dish, a mixed meze platter or just a coffee, you’re more than catered for here.

A local chain with six different locations around the city, Damascena is an expert in Middle Eastern food. They offer a fantastic breakfast menu including all the classic avocado and egg dishes, but if you fancy trying out something new, a very tasty Damascena breakfast item is the Juz-Muz, a scrambled egg dish with chillies and tomatoes, served with flatbread. If you happen to stumble upon a Damascena around lunch or dinner time, you will be handed a wonderful day menu with a variety of meze dishes, warming fuuls, and crunchy falafel served with some hummus or baba ganoush, or wrapped in Lebanese flatbread.

Damascena has several branches in Birmingah, including one in the city centre, another in Harborne, one in the jewellery quarter, and the last one is located in the boho suburb of Moseley. All Damascena coffee shops and cafes are a welcoming oasis of Middle Eastern hospitality that is a top spot for locals and visitors to the city alike. In 2016, they announced that they would be opening a new branch in the city center, and this central coffee shop is now so successful that they have won a range of different awards.

Turkish food is one of the more unusual takeaways of choice but we highly approve. Damascena is a Turkish coffee shop set opposite St Phillip’s Cathedral (although, they are also open in Moseley Village, Harborne and The Jewellery Quarter now too!). They serve a large, mouth-watering in-house menu, however, if you want to enjoy the joys of Turkish food from the comfort of your sofa, some Damascena dishes are also available for delivery via Deliveroo.

What: This may be another restaurant that doesn’t fit under the heading of vegetarian restaurant, but that doesn’t stop Damascena from being one of the city’s top spots for trying delicious meat free dishes. For something a little more contrasting, Damascena Coffee House is perfect for a sleepy morning as they offer warming Turkish coffee with Middle Eastern pastries in a snug space. Off the menu, we’d recommend the baked eggs manageesh (middle eastern flatbread usually eaten with breakfast). The smoked salami & cheese mangeshi and the baked eggs manageesh, incorporates eggs, herbs and cheese, all on top of a manageesh (which is similar to a pizza)!

Give the eggs Benedict and avocado smashes a miss for a change and try something new. Damascena have a brilliant breakfast menu packed with authentic Middle Eastern dishes to add a little spice to your breakfast. From Baked Egg Manageesh and breakfast meze, to Juz-Muz (eggs, tomatoes, fresh chillies and onions, served with flatbreads) and tahini and date honey dip with flatbreads, there are loads of exotic dishes to try.

It is, in our eyes, an absolute gem, boasting as a coffee-house/delicatessen/bakery, serving the finest Middle Eastern coffee and grub. Beginning on Moseley high street, Damascena has reached into the city centre and even more recently into Harborne – now with three options, you really have no excuse but to visit.

Accompanied by a piece of Turkish delight, Damascena’s rich Turkish coffee was creamy and unique.

Situated within the heart of Birmingham, this beautiful, little delicatessen is quickly building a pleasant reputation for it. While out shopping within the city centre it is well worth a visit, even if only for a quick drink. Step inside and you will immediately get a feel for the authentic Middle Eastern atmosphere that this coffee house presents.

If you’re in the mood for less traditional cuisine, Damascena is the perfect place. It offers great Middle Eastern food, including pastries and Manageesh (a type of Middle Eastern flatbread typically served along with the main dish.). It also serves amazing Turkish coffee that can give you a great start to an active day full of adventures.

Here’s a great example of how starting off small can lead to the creation of a stunning vision right in the heart of town. The Temple Row West Cafe opened in the city centre in early 2017 to build on the success of a coffee shop of the same name launched in Moseley in June 2014. The JQ branch of this renowned Birmingham chain opened 2019 serving up classic middle-eastern food and sweets in their gorgeously decorated restaurant. Still open for take-away and delivery, we look forward to using their outdoor seating soon to snack on a falafel wrap in the company of friends.
