Birmingham’s only Peruvian restaurant doesn’t have to be this good, but it is. Robert Ortiz’s Chakana, housed within a former bank in Moseley, pushes all flavour and presentation boundaries here; micro herbs and edible flowers float on blobs of vivid green, purple and peach, while main-course elements are placed so meticulously that it’s almost a shame to dig in and ruin it. Less of a hidden gem, more of a slow discovery – and we’d advise you to discover it soon.

Having left Michelin-starred Peruvian restaurant Lima in London to set up shop in Moseley, Robert Ortiz’s first solo project combines light and bright interiors with seriously colourful, flavourful plates of food. Kick off the meal with elegant flutes of creamily foamy pisco sours at the cobalt blue bar before feasting on classic and modern Peruvian dishes. Ceviches are well represented on the menu – try the sea bream, with butter-soft chunks of fish swimming in a zesty tiger’s milk with creamy sweet potato and crunchy, nutty canchita corn – as well as tiraditos (think Peruvian sashimi) and causas, a spicy potato terrine (order the king crab version, with potato coloured bright red with achiote, spicy avo purée and sweet morsels of crustacean).

Leading the charge for the range of Michelin rated restaurants is Chakana, a venue housed in a former bank that's serving Peruvian cooking from celebrated chef Robert Ortiz. There are gorgeous interiors inspired by the Inca Cross, alongside a price-point that makes this one of the more affordable choices on the list - perfect for a more laid-back evening sharing a meal with friends. The Moseley favourite also has one of the UK's largest collections of pisco to accompany its tasting menus, ceviche, suckling pig, braised octopus and more.

Peruvian chef Robert Ortiz is set to open his first solo restaurant in Birmingham this summer, bringing his Michelin-starred experience to the corner of Woodgate Road. It’s yet to be confirmed what the menu will look like, but we can only hope it will be filled will delicious Peruvian delicacies, such as Ceviche, Lomo Saltado and Tiradito. And if you’ve no idea what any of these delicacies are, then you’ve even more reason to get excited to try the new flavours coming the city!

The West Midlands is a gem for historical architecture, with Moseley being one of my favourite places to appreciate and explore them. So, to enjoy a unique dining spot housed in a gorgeous Victorian building I highly recommend visiting Chakana, a haven for those seeking the distinct flavours of Peru. Amazing food, the hot crab starter was amazing, it was an explosion of flavour and the pork was cooked to perfection. It amazing to have to much gluten free choice too
