The Oyster Club, on the other hand, which sits at the top of Temple Street, is altogether classier. It’s a posh seafood restaurant with a marble counter where you can eat Loch Ryan native oysters at £28 for six and omelette Arnold Bennett at £21.50. It’s a special-occasion place, with some lovely birthdays and anniversaries taking place on the night we went, but even they couldn’t drown out the noise from the “considerably richer than yous” sitting to both my right and left, and who were forensically detailing their properties, post-tax profits and jetsetting adventures at a volume so loud, it blew the sorrel off my rhubarb-dressed oysters.

The “junior sister to Adam’s” on Bennetts Hill “is one of the rare places in Birmingham where the diner can enjoy fine fish dishes, though some of them are rather expensive” (albeit not quite as expensive as its acclaimed sibling). “Not surprisingly, the diner may start with a choice of oysters” but there’s a wide range of other “excellent” fishy dishes too (including caviar for the plush) and, while it “couldn’t be further from the sea, it makes up for it with the quality of the food” – also now available to sample in their newly refurbished ‘Aphrodite’s Bar’.

Birmingham has an unusually high concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants (four, currently) and Folium – a chic, boxy room in the city-centre’s quiet Georgian Jewellery Quarter – is surely in the running to join that glittering firmament. Ben Tesh’s seasonally-driven, modernist dishes reconcile creative flair and bold flavours with rare maturity. For instance, oyster tartare sauce served with salt ‘n’ vinegar cod’s skin (a piscine take on the pork scratching, designed to look like an oyster shell), is as aesthetically striking as it is outrageously tasty.

A third can be found at modern British restaurant Carters of Moseley. Not only one of the best fine dining restaurants in Birmingham, this is one of the best in the country, the only other Birmingham restaurant to be named in the Sunday Times Top 100 restaurants in the UK and ranked 66 in the 2018 National Restaurant Awards. The most recent star was awarded to Opheem in Summer Row, the first Indian restaurant in the city to get the accolade and yet another triumph for Aston-born chef-owner Aktar Islam.

A few minutes’ walk from central New Street station, The Oyster Club is chef Adam Stokes’ second Birmingham restaurant. Grab a seat at one of the luxe leather barstools at the counter and order a platter of oysters – there’s normally six different varieties on ice, ready to be shucked, with the option of having them as nature intended or with a Japanese or rockerfeller dressing. There are also three different types of caviar, served with crème fraîche and blinis.

Now you may be thinking… Seafood for lunch, in Birmingham… are you mad?. Probably, but don’t let oysters and shellfish put you off from going to one of the best places to eat Birmingham City Centre. The Oyster Club is located on Temple Street - up a slight hill from Birmingham Central Station on the way to Pigeon Park (the park with the church in the middle of it next to Colmore Row) and is near to lots of unique bars to grab a drink afterwards.

The restaurant, from chef Adam Stokes, has a relaxed vibe, welcoming diners for a full meal or just a few oysters with a glass of wine. It's open for lunch, pre-theater meals, and dinner, and walk-ins are welcome. If oysters aren't your thing, the menu has lots of other great dishes to choose from, including lobster risotto, duck breast, and an indulgent Wagyu burger.

The menu mostly focused on fish, as you would expect, but there were a few non-fish dishes available, such as steak and chips, lamb rump, or roast pumpkin and feta salad. There was a selection of oysters and caviars. The oysters were served fresh or dressed, and the tempura oyster was a favourite choice for anybody not sure about eating them.

Owned by Adam Stokes, expect very special seafood and service at this chic eatery. As well, as oysters from around the world expect a "good variety of top quality fish and shellfish also feature. If the goal of Oyster Club was to prove that Birmingham could finally have a properly class fish restaurant, they’ve suceeded. Utilising the fish suppliers from their sister restaurant, Adams, the produce is king here; treated simply and cooked with total precision. It’s pricey, but worth it.

Although this seafood restaurant is positioned as a relaxed version of chef Adam Stokes’ fine-dining joint, it’s still a pretty chic affair. Take a seat at the oyster bar to enjoy rocks from Jersey and Cornwall, or settle into the royal blue booths and feast on a Wagyu burger with chips.
