Visitors love the lively energy, live music, and the opportunity to sample local delicacies and international flavors. While generally well-received, some note that it can get very busy, especially on weekends, and recommend arriving early.

"What a wonderful experience
All the fresh produce was just incredible. So many stalls to look at and so many with original hand made items. Loves the live entertainment while we tucked into a bite from one of the many food vendors ."

Michele Smith

"The marker is quite decent with balanced mix of prepared food, raw food, crafts, and antiques. Foodies may want to know there is Spanish paella, original pasta Alfredo in Parmesan cheese preparation, and French crepes. Also freshly made marshmallows. There's been a Friday market on this site since 1604, but St George’s, built 1890-1896, is the only surviving covered Victorian market in Belfast. It was named the UK's best large indoor market of 2014 by the National Association of British Market Authorities, and I’m not surprised. The Friday fish and variety market has 248 fascinating stalls, with 23 fish counters alone, while the Saturday and Sunday food and craft markets have a huge, infinitely tempting range of local, continental and specialty foods and local art and crafts, to a backdrop of live music.

OFM Awards 2016 best market: St George's Market | Food

Friday morning, 6am, Belfast’s historic St George’s Market, winner of this year’s OFM Award for Best Market: Sinatra’s greatest hits ooze out of the sound system as the vast market is starting to come to life. Half food, half clothes, vinyl, bric-a-brac, memorabilia and hardware, the “variety market” mood is sleepy and mellow. The fish vans from Kilkeel and Portavogie have been parked outside for three hours waiting for the Lazy Goose cafe to serve a bacon, cheese and spring onion soda-bread sandwich and strong tea before the unloading starts.

How to spend the perfect day in Belfast

Built in the 1890s in the centre of the city, St George’s is one of Belfast’s oldest attractions — its Friday variety market dates back to 1604 — and the city’s last remaining Victorian covered market. While you’ll find everything from rare antiques to handmade clothing here, it’s the food that this place has become best known for. Everyone comes for a Belfast bap from Sandra’s Grill: a fresh, crusty bread roll filled with Irish sausage and bacon, a runny fried egg, oozy cheese, grilled mushrooms and onions.

Built between 1890 and 1896, the lively St George's Market is the last surviving Victorian covered market in the city, and we think it's one of the most exciting tourist attractions as well as a great place to hang out for the locals on days out. Pre-1890, there was an open market and probably a slaughterhouse here. The red brick structure faced other grim episodes in its past: after the Blitz, it was temporarily used as an emergency mortuary.
