Reviews Summary

Diners rave about The Jumble Room, praising its exceptional, flavor-packed food and the warm, eclectic atmosphere. The passionate chefs and friendly staff create a truly special dining experience. While some mention wanting to dine more often, most reviews highlight the outstanding quality and recommend booking in advance.

"This resturant is a gem, where you are made to feel like part of the family the minute you walk through the door. Chrissy is a true artist. Her food and flavours are out of this world. I felt like I had died and gone to heaven. Emily was just as excited about our meals as we were. I absolutely LOVE the Jumble Room and we will be back. Such an awesome awesome treat. Good food, great people and a full dining experience in a setting that is eclectic. This little Gem of a resturant is a must!!!"

Nicky Love

"We had a amazing dinner here, our host Emily was so warm and welcoming. There's vegan options on the menu but she also made me some off the menu dishes which were really good. It has a great atmosphere I highly recommend!"

Shona Reeves

"Wow! What a wonderful evening. My wife and I were welcomed with a warm smile at the bar and shown to a cosy corner table, tucked beside a stack of nostalgic Desperate Dan comics from the ’90s. Our waiter, Ross, looked after us brilliantly – friendly, knowledgeable, and easy to chat with throughout the night.

The food was outstanding: beautifully presented, packed with flavour, and faultless from start to finish. The Jumble Room really lives up to its name, a vibrant mix of quirky art, and vintage comic books, and an atmosphere that makes the whole place feel special.

If you get the chance, don’t miss it. We certainly won’t, we’ll be back."

Restaurants in The Lake District

A small stone building dating to the 18th century, Grasmere's first shop is now a quirky, family-run restaurant. The food is an eclectic mix of international and traditional British; think porcini mushroom arancini, beetroot and pumpkin ravioli, or Lebanese chicken with clementine and fennel. A dedicated local fan base means the place always buzzes, and the owners' enthusiasm is contagious.

The 18 best Lake District restaurants

This wonderfully – and aptly – named restaurant, fizzes with energy from the pink and purple velvet cushions to the mis-matched plates to the bluesy music. It’s about as far as you can get from the twee tea-rooms or traditional pubs elsewhere in Grasmere. Food is a refreshing Middle-Eastern spin on Lakeland produce.

In order to eat well, the budget traveller has to accept certain limitations. For instance, you'll have to eat at the Jumble Room at lunchtime, on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Even then, the menu only offers around six dishes at under £10 a head.

Condé Nast Traveller

Lake District guide | CN Traveller

Fine dining hit the Lakes decades ago with chefs sending forth amuse-bouches of pea-ice to diners previously content with things dipped in puddles of Hellmann's. There are now as many farmers' markets and food festivals and awards in Cumbria as the Cotswolds and you can eat as daintily or as ethically or locally sourced as you could wish in restaurants and country- house hotels where waiters loom like footmen and crystal glasses are perpetually being raised in appreciation. If, like me, 10-course homages to the majesty of appetite leave you flattened, then the Jumble Room, pictured, hidden down a lane in a Grasmere village, redresses the balance: casual but still birthday-special, with delicate, delicious starters (spiced almond fritters) and don't-mess-with-us puddings.

The chef is an unhinged genius…” Now if that isn’t reason enough to visit The Jumble Room and sample the flavour bombs on offer, we don’t know what is. On chef Chrissy’s internationally inspired menu you’ll find dishes like Koliwada cod, Miso-caramel sirloin steak, a handmade pasta of the day, slow-cooked Lebanese lamb stew, and Dithoise chicken – a South African dish that features chicken breast stuffed with almonds, apricots and honey. And if you’ve got room for dessert, you must try Chrissy’s rushbearing gingerbread with hot toffee sauce and custard.

Best Cumbria Restaurants - Reviews & Restaurant Guide

Opened way back in the heyday of Britpop (1996), Chrissy & Andy Hill’s Grasmere stalwart started out serving homemade cakes, but its menu has expanded over the years to take in everything from handmade pastas to curries and ‘Jumble Room mainstays’ like Chrissy’s classic gingerbread with hot toffee sauce. There’s “always a buzz” in the eclectically decorated restaurant but, for one longtime fan, it is the “great food that keeps us going back”. PS – The owners also run bijou B&B the ‘Randy Pike’, on the outskirts of Ambleside.
