To discover Ukrainian food, head to Kumanets, situated in the city centre. The restaurant follows a rustic Ukrainian theme through more than just its dishes – there’s a collection of traditional embroidery and colourful shawls, vintage accessories like spinning wheels, jugs, and even a wood-burning stove decorated with petrykivka (traditional Ukrainian art flow) paintings. On the menu, you will find homemade sausages, black pudding, potato pancakes, herring, salo, or the typical Black Sea treats like red caviar and puff pastries, among many other things.

Kumanets is a sort-of medieval looking acid trip, filled with uniformed servers who walk around smiling (tho inside they rage) attending to your needs with the silliest of hats. The dishes are pure Ukrainian here and bus loads of locals and tourists ram themselves in through the cattle-gates and splay out on a table ready to infect the air with gluttony. I arrived fashionably late.

As long as you are fine with that, it is a must visit place in Odessa.

Kumanets is located near the Deribasovskaya street and it is an authentic Ukrainian restaurant. I am sure you will enjoy the decoration – traditional Ukrainian style and also the food. The red borsch (beet soup) is the specialty you would enjoy and should not miss, as you are in a Ukrainian city.

Located just one block away from the apartment I’d rented in the city center is Kumanets, a warm and cozy restaurant that offers true local cuisine. I recommend trying a flight of their vodkas, which include a spicy horseradish vodka, cranberry vodka, and a unique sea buckthorn vodka.

Walking into Kumanets is like entering a Ukrainian Disney World — without the rides and lines. Despite an effusion of stuffed chickens, the traditional atmosphere is very friendly and the service excellent. The food is fantastic, fairly inexpensive, and comes in mountainous portions.
