Reviews Summary

Baylan is celebrated as a historic Istanbul institution, lauded for its iconic Kup Griye dessert and artisanal ice creams. While many praise its rich flavors and nostalgic atmosphere, some find the prices steep and the quality not as exceptional as its reputation suggests. The charming garden and elegant ambiance are consistent highlights, making it a memorable experience for most visitors.

"Baylan in Kadıköy is more than just a pastry shop—it’s an institution woven into the fabric of Istanbul’s culinary and cultural history. Stepping inside feels like entering a timeless space where tradition meets elegance. The legendary Kup Griye, a signature dessert adored across generations, is reason enough to visit. But Baylan offers far more: a refined selection of confections, pastries, and desserts unlike anything found elsewhere in Turkey. Its loyal regulars, nostalgic atmosphere, and occasional celebrity sightings only add to its charm. A visit to Baylan is not just a treat—it's a ritual."

M Hancer

"I won't recommend this place to anyone. Although it's a famous place, the quality isn't good at all. The famous cup Griye is just ice-cream with caramel sauce, it's not something that needs special skills or bakery technique. And it costs 250 tl, approximately 8 dollars. Plus they have 10% service charge, which is ridiculous for such place. Remember this place is not fancy at all!"

Chongtian Xu

"Recommended by one of friends, said this place is oldest surviving pastry shop in Istanbul. I had tried their famous Kup Griye, the vanilla and caramel ice cream with roasted almond and caramel sauce. It is absolutely delicious, the combination of each elements is amazing."

Heritage Restaurants

In 1919, a 16-year old Philip Lenas left his home in the Epirus mountains in Greece and moved to Istanbul to work in one of the first chocolate factories established in the country. Four years later, Lenas set up his own patisserie in Beyoğlu, which would soon be frequented by leading literary figures now often collectively referred to as the ‘Baylan bunch’. The oldest surviving patisserie in Istanbul, Baylan currently operates its main branch in Kadıköy and a newly-opened brasserie in Bebek.

As old as the Republic of Turkey itself Baylan started out as a small patisserie in Beyoglu in 1923 and has evolved into a proper restaurant. Today it has two locations, one off the Bosphorus in upscale Bebek and the other in Kadikoy, which is more a of a patisserie offering traditional desserts. Head over to the Bebek location for brunch and try to grab a seat right off the turquoise waters of the strait, although the rest of the restaurant is just as lovely to sit in.

Visit Istanbul: Travel Guide to Turkey

I asked a friend from Turkish Munchies for restaurant recommendations and one of the places he suggested was Baylan, a patisserie that’s been open since 1925. They serve many delicious cakes and desserts but what they’re really known for is kup griye – a heavenly dessert made with vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, creme chantilly, ground pistachios, and toffee. Baylan invented kup gryie so if you’re fond of desserts, then you’ll definitely want to try this.
