Vessel 11 is a restaurant, bar, and live music venue set within the floating hull of a historic lightship. Climb aboard to find a British gastropub menu and an eclectic range of drinks. Vessel 11 boasts live music events in the ship’s bowels, in the ‘belly bar,’ while quizzes and more happen in the bright and striking ‘bow bar.’ For an evening of food and drinks that wouldn’t look out of place in a Wes Anderson flick, find a berth aboard Vessel 11.

The V11 is not actually a brewery but a gastropub located in a former British lightship (i.e. a ship that acts a lighthouse) that is permanently docked in the center of Rotterdam. Although they have been serving their homebrews for some time, I wasn’t aware of that when I wrote my last blog, as they only sell it from the tap at V11 and are not bottled. Their first beer was made in 2014 together with Eurotrash.

Sitting on the deck, sipping your drink and surrounded by the dynamics of the city, Vessel11 is the ideal place to hang out. This British gastro-pub was built in the UK and served as a mobile lighthouse in Wales, but has been in Rotterdam since 1999. Here, in one of Rotterdam’s oldest harbours, you can eat dishes inspired by British cuisine, taste Vessel11 beer on tap and watch bands perform below deck.

Enjoy drinks in the sun on the top deck at Vessel 11 before heading downstairs for live music and dancing. It’s also the dock for the Hot Tug – wood-fired hot tubs to bob about in with a group of friends and a drink. Later in the evening, the mescal bar at Mexican Alfredo’s Taqueria (pictured above) has a hopping terrace at the back that stays open until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights.

It can be booked for special occasions, but if you’re a regular visitor like I was, it’s just as fun. They have a full kitchen serving everything from a Full English Breakfast to Sunday Roast to modern twists on other British classics, all made from local and sustainable produce.
