In a high-ceiling former garage—still housing a number of classic cars—this large, modern, and convivial restaurant is worth the trek across the IJ River. The "Golden Pheasant" offers good value for a regularly changing menu of Dutch fare with a French twist: expect favorites like oysters, roast chicken, and Angus beef, along with a variety of specials.

Hotel restaurants went through a decade or two of falling out of fashion, but thankfully they’re now holding their own – and housing some of Amsterdam’s best restaurants. I was recently invited to Carstens Brasserie, in the Park Plaza Victoria hotel – handily located right next to Centraal Station. Perhaps unusually for a restaurant catering to visitors, the menu really does focus on Dutch food – right down to the wine list that featured no less than three Dutch bottles from the south of the country.

Niels Wouters is responsible for the wines — he wouldn’t dream of calling himself a sommelier or a wine director — at Hotel de Goudfazant, the popular restaurant in an old warehouse in Amsterdam Noord. He reports booming business in a wave of post-lockdown euphoria. “There’s so much energy, and the phone bookings have just gone crazy.” He’s also noticed that the Goudfazant’s customers have become more educated, and more willing to spend over the last two years.

Located in a former auto garage in hipster, industrial Amsterdam Noord, Hotel de Goudfazant occupies a huge warehouse space that gives the restaurant a relaxed, no-frills feel. When I went back there very recently, I was pleased to see they still had a poultry and pistachio terrine on the menu – and I still loved it. As mains, we ordered the crispy pork belly with Hollandse garnalen and samphire, and cauliflower with epoisses cheese and hazelnuts.

Don’t be bamboozled by the name – this cool, cavernous building doesn’t offer overnight stays. It’s actually the address that kicked off the trend for warehouse dining, back when industrial Amsterdam-Noord was a no-go area. Now, it’s a stalwart on the city’s dining scene, beloved of local creatives, who happily hop on the ferry for its grilled king crab and note-perfect roast chicken.

But it is one of Amsterdam’s truly unique dining experiences. Housed in a vast warehouse (partly filled with vintage cars), in a gritty industrial part of Amsterdam North, Goudfazant regularly serves 300 customers on a Saturday night. If that sounds crazy, it is – but what’s even crazier is the excellent quality of the food and the efficiency of the service, given this massive scale.

Not actually a hotel, but a spectacular restaurant located in a former garage, de Goudfazant has a simple seasonal menu, which always includes delicious spit-roasted chicken. If you’re visiting Amsterdam for a special occasion, we’d heartily recommend a visit to Hotel de Goudfazant. Unlike its name suggests, this is not a hotel but rather a restaurant in an old industrial warehouse in Amsterdam Noord (not so far from ClinkNOORD youth hostel). The space manages to feel grand yet cosy with an impressive chandelier hanging from the high ceiling.
