Reviews Summary

Café-Restaurant Amsterdam is praised for its stunning industrial ambiance and its excellent seafood offerings, making it a memorable dining destination. While many highlight the spacious, unique setting and diverse menu, some diners have noted that service can be slow during busy periods and food quality can occasionally be inconsistent.

"Café-Restaurant Amsterdam is a unique dining spot housed in a former pump station, blending industrial charm with a lively atmosphere. The spacious interior, high ceilings, and warm lighting create an inviting setting for both casual meals and special occasions.

The menu offers a diverse selection, ranging from fresh seafood and hearty meat dishes to vegetarian options, all prepared with a touch of Dutch flair. Service is attentive, though it can get busy during peak hours.

Whether you’re after a cozy lunch, a romantic dinner, or drinks with friends, this spot is a must-visit for its ambiance and quality food."

J. Lepianda

"One of my favourite restaurants in Amsterdam. The brasserie vibes of this place are unmatched. The menu has loads of options and they’re all delicious. I recommend taking an entree and a main dish, trust me, you will have enough food with the two! Yes, it is pricier than your average restaurant but that’s why I like it, I can come for a special occasion and every time I come I am not disappointed. Great atmosphere as this restaurant is in an old water pumping station so very cool architecture and super spacious and open. The staff are super friendly although sometimes it can take a bit to get noticed bit that’s just because there are many tables."

Carlos Dominguez Bado

"The seafood is amazing, tasty, fresh and highly recommended. Drinks were good too, quick service and amazing desserts.

We sat outside, so quiet and relaxing - a great spot to relax. The meat options too are highly recommended- fresh and tasty.

Easy to reach with public transport as well."

Once the engine room of an 1853 former pumphouse that pumped fresh water from the nearby dune system until 1996, and still retaining an engine and pump, the vast whitewashed space beneath a striking timber ceiling is now home to Café Restaurant Amsterdam (aka “Cradam”). Brasserie-style dining here excels in seafood dishes like North Sea crab with lemon mayonnaise, smoked Dutch herring with samphire, and shellfish platters piled with delicacies like Frisian Islands razor clams and Waddenzee oysters. It’s just south of the canal bordering Westerpark and adjacent former gasworks-turned-cultural center Westergas.

The 50 most child-friendly places to eat in Amsterdam - Updated 2025

We have found Café Restaurant Amsterdam and the Ij-Kantine to rank highly for this – the first in a breathtakingly wonderful space (one of Amsterdam’s finest) along with a decent kids menu and good brasserie food for adults, whilst the Ij-Kantine over the other side of the River Ij has the advantage of a (free) ferry journey to get there and a dedicated play area inside – although recently we’ve heard the food has been a little lacklustre. Another good alternative is to head to one of the George restaurants. There are about five of these in Amsterdam, all with a slightly different menu and ambience but the unifying theme is “French brasserie, New York style…in Amsterdam’ – think Soho-House-esque neighbourhood spots with metro tiles, leather couches, brass lighting and marble bars.

Child-friendly cafés and restaurants in Amsterdam

Located in a former pump station, this vast industrial space is full of fascinating turbines for kids to explore. As well as a kids’ colouring corner, they offer a children’s menu with crowd-pleasing favourites such as fresh fish nuggets, burgers and pasta; a gorgeous terrace for when the sun comes out; and great food for grown-ups, too. Perhaps most importantly, the fantastic acoustics mean that even the noisiest little ones won’t cause a disturbance.

Just across the street from the Westerpark and the Westergasfabriek, this cavernous restaurant is housed in what used to be a 19th-century industrial water-pumping plant. It’s popular with local families and there is plenty of room to spread out. The restaurant has a wide-ranging international menu, but it's known for its big seafood platters that are stacked with oysters, clams, and mussels.

Located opposite Westerpark, next to the old water tower, this expansive space originally housed machinery used to pump water for the city before it was converted into a restaurant. Deepa’s verdict on child-friendliness: One of the great mind tricks nature plays on parents is how easily we forget things (this is how we end up having more children). Though I have a child myself, I’m forever asking my fellow parental units where I can drag my offspring (and those of visiting friends) if I want to have a decent dinner. Café-Restaurant Amsterdam always comes up.

Best Restaurants in Amsterdam: 10 Modern Classics

When a city is four metres below sea level, water management is of paramount importance. So it’s no surprise that since the 1900s, the Westerpark area has had its own water pumping machine, water tower and engine room. While these have evolved in the intervening years, the disused engine room was converted into a café and restaurant in 1996.
