Situated in a small white house with its leafy façade, the interior is a blend of modern Sino-Portuguese with antique decoration. One of the joys of visiting Thailand out of season is that you manage to secure a window seat at one of the most popular restaurants in Phuket Town. We had absolutely no idea how popular this restaurant was until we visited, we were actually just looking for a nice restaurant with great Thai food and on arrival noticed that people were queuing up, not to come inside, but to take photos of themselves with the sign outside. After dining and paying up we did some research only to find that One Chun restaurant has proudly received a Michelin star 4 years in a row!

This casual dining restaurant served authentic southern food but it’s a bit more expensive than many restaurants I have tried in Phuket, but still reasonable price because of good quality. Furthermore, all foods are delicious. The dishes are flavorful, especially fried grilled pork neck with chili, pepper and garlic (165 THB), and the stir-fried Malindjo leaves with egg and dried shrimp (165 THB).

We’ve covered a Michelin-starred restaurant that’s more upmarket, so here’s one that stays true to local fare for the masses. One Chun Cafe & Restaurant is famous for several dishes that have widespread appeal, due to their roots in hawker culture. What we love about this particular restaurant is the vibe that it seems to exude, thanks to the presence of fascinating knick-knacks and gadgets.

Of course you need to also eat at Raya, or their younger sister’s outlet behind it, One Chun. Similar vibe and menu, same extended family, different kitchen. Both feature another of Phuket’s must-eats, that being Gaeng Nua Pu Bai Chaplu, massive chunks of white crab meat and an incredible use of turmeric in the coconut herbal curry-for-your-soul soup, topped with piper leaves.
