This small, hip-looking café is actually a front for deeply traditional northern Thai cooking, albeit served in the cool surroundings of a revamped teak village house in the trendy Nimmanhaemin quarter. Chiang Mai twenty-somethings rediscovering their Lanna roots gather at lunchtime for bowls of rich, sour gaeng hang lay, a Burmese-inspired stew of fatty belly pork with peanuts and tamarind. The restaurant also serves a mean plate of nam prik ong (ground pork, tomato and chilli relish, served with raw aubergine, carrots and other fresh veg).

Choose from dining in a traditional wood house at Huen Muan Jai, the trendy Kinlum Kindee in the Nimmanhaemin district or brave the inevitable wait at Tong Tem Toh – three restaurants specialising in northern Thai dishes made to share. Opt for an appetiser platter which will likely include an assortment of boiled vegetables, pork rind, sausages and chilli relishes for dipping, then add a few other must-try northern Thai dishes to your order.

Trendy and always full of diners, this is the go-to spot in Nimmanhaemin for easy-to-eat northern Thai fare. Although overloaded at peak hours by locals and tour groups drawn in by their smokey grilled meats, dips and curries, once you do get a table you’ll see why it's so popular. The food is as authentic as it comes but their mild spice options make it a great starting point for any northern Thai food virgins.

Unlike the hugely popular noodle soups of Lanna cuisine, the lesser found bites are often better found at local markets where they are each sold separately (a fantastic market here). As there really isn’t a whole load of Lanna Specific Restaurants around Nimman as you may have expected. However, one of the better, is most definitely Tong Tem Toh which sells circular sets similar to the that of traditional khantoke tables, including the more prominent bites of sai oua sausage (aka Chiang Mai sausage), local chilli dips, in nam prik noom, a toasted green chilli dip, and nam prik ong, a minced pork and tomato based dip.

If you’re up Nimmanhemin way, among the eclectic collection of boutique beer bars and chic fusion eateries you’ll find a couple of excellent spots specialising in North Thai fare, including Tong Tem Toh, set in a lovely old teak house on Soi 13, and Kaosoinimman on Soi 7. The latter has a full northern Thai menu alongside its signature khao soi—of which they have some original variations—and sets up in a small but cute garden with interior and exterior seating options. Tong Tem Toh is hugely popular and there’s often a queue for tables for lunch and dinner.

Another great place for Lanna cuisine in a wooden house setting found in the middle of the trendy Nimman area. When I first walked into Tong Tem Toh (ต๋อง เต็ม โต๊ะ), I didn’t think it would be so good, it looked more like a Thai trendy style restaurant where to modify to food to go with the trends. I was actually pleasantly surprised that the northern Thai dishes they served were incredibly vibrant, spicy, and extremely tasty.

Set in the trendy Nimmanhaemin district, near MAYA Lifestyle Shopping Center, and just a 20-minute drive to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Tong Tem Toh offers a chic, energetic atmosphere and specializes in Northern Thai cuisine with a modern presentation. Don’t miss the spicy sausage (sai oua), grilled pork neck (moo yang), and tamarind leaf salad. Tourists and locals flock here for affordable, high-quality meals and an energetic ambiance.

Located in the middle of the most “chic” part of the city, Tong Tem Toh offers an extensive authentic Lanna menu. It’s Fiat’s go-to place for rare, hard-to-find traditional dishes. While you can get the red and green chili dips basically at any market, right here they come in an appetizer platter with other tasty sides like Sai Oua, crispy pork rinds, hard-boiled eggs, and steamed vegetables.

As you approach the restaurant, you’ll notice two things: the “grill master” cooking up a variety of sausages and other specialties, and a long line of people waiting for a table.

Considering that most Isaan restaurants are fluorescent lit mom-and-pop affairs – which is fine, but sometimes you’re perversely interested in a hint of ambiance, or at least clean tables – I was particularly impressed with the contemporary design of Tong Tem Toh, a Northern Thai restaurant located close to Chiang Mai University.

If you are interested in trying real authentic Lanna food and would like to go straight to the source, may I recommend Tong Tem Toh in Chiang Mai. There are plenty of incredible Northern Thai food in Chiang Mai but Tong Tem Toh is my absolute favorite.

If you want to enjoy Northern Thai Cuisine – look no further than Tong Tem Toh. The queue will be pretty long during lunch time. Though those who aren’t used to heavy breakfast should come in the off peak hours as Tong Tem Toh is very popular.

This is one of the most authentic places you can eat at in the neighbohood of Nimman, and perhaps all of Chiang Mai!. I don’t think you can go wrong with getting any of their dishes. We tried several and loved them all.

Northwest of the Old City, in the trendy Nimmanhaemin area, you’ll find Tong Tem Toh, and not too far from here lies Huen Muan Jai. All three serve up authentic Northern Thai food worth seeking out.
