Reviews Summary
Tong Tem Toh is celebrated for its authentic and flavorful Northern Thai cuisine, with many diners raving about signature dishes like the grilled pork and unique local specialties. While the food is a definite draw, be prepared for potential queues, and some find certain dishes can be quite spicy. The fast service and reasonable prices add to its appeal, making it a popular choice for both locals and tourists seeking an authentic taste of Chiang Mai.
"Truly unique spot that specializes in northern Thai cuisine. The restaurant was very rustic with a really cool vibe. We came in a party of eight and we sat within 20 minutes. There was a mix of locals and tourists there so that was a good sign before we sat. The menu was a little difficult to go through because we were not familiar with Northern Thai cuisine. We chose some things we felt. We were safe with like the barbecue ribs, the chicken wings, and a few other basic items like Thai omelettes with minced pork. It was all very good. My only criticism was that there was not any traditional Thai dishes for someone to choose from in case they were not familiar or comfortable with Northern Thai cuisine. I would say that 20% of the menu had some sort of ant 🐜 egg in the dish. I was too much of a scaredy-cat to try it, but I’m sure it’s pretty good considering the northern Thai people love it. One callout was the northern curry pork roast, it was exceptional and a highlight! I would come back again just for that dish."

"Local good, clean, good taste. The best thing is you can tell them the spice level. I am half northern but my body doesn’t adjust well to spice. Many local places would judge you for that, this place they ask if you wanna go minimum, medium, standard or spicier than standard. I ordered 2 dishes ended up packing home one. Spending around 150 per person with non-alcoholic drink, 1 dish and rice is good."

"Authentic northern style food with good range of varieties. Quite spicy for the soup for foreigner. The rest of the dishes are stir fried local mushroom quite unique too. Can try if you have not eaten northern style food. 😋"

As there really isn’t a whole load of Lanna Specific Restaurants around Nimman as you may have expected. However, one of the better, is most definitely Tong Tem Toh which sells circular sets similar to the that of traditional khantoke tables, including the more prominent bites of sai oua sausage (aka Chiang Mai sausage), local chilli dips, in nam prik noom, a toasted green chilli dip, and nam prik ong, a minced pork and tomato based dip.
