Reviews Summary

Huen Phen is celebrated for its authentic Northern Thai cuisine and unique, artifact-filled ambiance, making it feel like dining in a museum. While many rave about dishes like Khao Soi and Sai Hua, some diners have noted inconsistent service and occasionally questionable food quality, though the reasonable prices are often highlighted as a significant plus.

"The restaurant is actually divided in 2. One side is open during the day and looks like a traditional place, while the other part is only open for dinner and is a very surprising place. In both case the cuisine is good (we really enjoyed their sai ua), in quantity, and for a very reasonable price. We went to both sides, but our preference goes to the night part and all the surrounding artifacts. You are dining in a museum, but apparently some artifacts can be purchased. We elected to dine outside of the AC room but did not suffer from heat at all."

"Seriously good food but countered by the really rubbish service. The table next to us was in a hurry and had only just finished getting their order when we were leaving. We arrived after them!

Food is great though. Very tasty and the Burmese curry very very moreish"

Jerry Spencer

"Steeped in atmosphere, delicious food at quite reasonable prices, adequate service, and a very convenient location half-way along Ratchamanka Road in the Old City.
I suggest booking over walk-in, and anticipate a leisurely evening.
I was also curious as to why they had an all-male serving staff team, which never helps. In spite of the service issues, I recommend this restaurant."

If you’d like to check out more specifically north Thai cuisine, then Huen Phen (also mentioned in our accommodation section) has the best reputation within the Old City. They present a comprehensive English-language menu with all the Chiang Mai classics such as sai hua, nam phrik ong, nam phrik noom, gaeng hanglay and so on. You have a choice of two locations: their long-standing restaurant on Ratchamanka Road, or a new, plush setting on the top floor of Baan Huen Phen Boutique Hotel opposite.

Chiang Mai's Khao Soi | The Travellist

Although this restaurant is also open in the evenings (and is one of my favourite spots for Northern Thai food), they only serve khao soi for lunch in a more casual area of the restaurant to their upmarket evening setting. The sauce seemed more like an Indian curry than other versions and it had a grainy thickness to it, but I wasn’t sure if that was because I arrived at the end of the lunch service and maybe I got the bottom of the pot. The chicken was pretty good but nothing special.

It’s hard to avoid a 40-year-old restaurant that’s widely known for serving the best khao soi in Chiang Mai. The Best Khao Soi in Chiang-Mai

HUEN PHEN – ( I reckon this has to be my current Number 1 place to eat Khao soi ) This Restaurant has been on the go for over seventy years and apparently the oldest and most authentic Khao soi place in town. When we go to eat here its always busy and we end up with a seating number and await our turn. Theres lots of Thais eating here so I take that as a sign that its a good place to dine.
