If you’d like to check out more specifically north Thai cuisine, then Huen Phen (also mentioned in our accommodation section) has the best reputation within the Old City. They present a comprehensive English-language menu with all the Chiang Mai classics such as sai hua, nam phrik ong, nam phrik noom, gaeng hanglay and so on. You have a choice of two locations: their long-standing restaurant on Ratchamanka Road, or a new, plush setting on the top floor of Baan Huen Phen Boutique Hotel opposite.

Although this restaurant is also open in the evenings (and is one of my favourite spots for Northern Thai food), they only serve khao soi for lunch in a more casual area of the restaurant to their upmarket evening setting. The sauce seemed more like an Indian curry than other versions and it had a grainy thickness to it, but I wasn’t sure if that was because I arrived at the end of the lunch service and maybe I got the bottom of the pot. The chicken was pretty good but nothing special.

It’s hard to avoid a 40-year-old restaurant that’s widely known for serving the best khao soi in Chiang Mai. It’s even harder to avoid, given its location in the middle of the Old City, south of Wat Chedi Luang, where one can stopover in the middle of a local temple tour. Huen Phen is famous for its deliciously good-value Lanna specialties; the dishes are made using old family recipes, so you know this is the real deal.

Located right in the center of Chiang Mai, within the old city walls, and just about 5 minutes on foot from Wat Chedi Luang, Huen Phen is a longstanding local restaurant. Built in a traditional Lanna style, with teak wooden beams and small antiques adorning the shelves, Huen Phen’s setting is lovely. HUEN PHEN – ( I reckon this has to be my current Number 1 place to eat Khao soi ) This Restaurant has been on the go for over seventy years and apparently the oldest and most authentic Khao soi place in town. When we go to eat here its always busy and we end up with a seating number and await our turn. Theres lots of Thais eating here so I take that as a sign that its a good place to dine.
