Reviews Summary
Blackitch Artisan Kitchen is widely praised for its innovative tasting menus that artfully fuse Thai flavors with global techniques, utilizing high-quality, locally sourced ingredients. Diners rave about the creative presentation and the unique culinary journey it offers. While the experience is highly valued, the exclusive nature with limited seating and higher price point are factors to consider.
"This is hands down the most innovative and delicious meal I’ve ever had in Chiang Mai or even in Thailand. There are many other really good traditional Thai restaurants but this one is different, they took their food very seriously - local ingredients, with global techniques - you can find some Chinese and some Japanese influences and some French? It’s a fantastic fusion with distinct Thai identity. If you are into food, and how chef create a beautiful combination of complexity of texture and flavour in every single dishes, then come here to experience it. Its downstairs entrance looks like a tardy cafe, but when you walk up to the upstairs dining room, the atmosphere changed immediately and it’s cozy and sleek.
I love how the flavours are so throughly put together creating incredible layers of taste, texture, which is wonderfully balanced and sometimes surprising - I can think of the fat duck in the UK, in terms of surprising yet outstanding combinations. Standout dish for me is the fish ceviche in a seaweed hand roll, siting in a bed of flowers. Oyster - which is so fresh, succulent and full of surprising Thai flavours; crab with coconut milk and some pineapple cubes - wonderful flavour and texture combo!! Chicken soba - heavenly broth with super tender chicken thigh; another one is the lightly grilled tiger prawn in green curry sauce- couldn’t be more perfect. Deserts is light, fantastic combination of crunchy cookies and ice cream. I’m in heaven.
Presentation is top notch including accompanying stoneware, flowers, artfully put together. My compliment to the chef. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal here. Looks like the chef changes the menu regularly. Great effort!
Price is high for Chiang Mai standard but it’s worth every penny, cheaper than many other Michelin starred restaurants in the world.
Highly recommended."

"This restaurant was the highlight of my trip to Chiang Mai!
Definitely the best meal of the journey, Blackitch Artisan Kitchen’s Regional Thai Essence tasting menu (May edition) features 13 creative courses inspired by the flavors and ingredients from all over Thailand. It reflects the chef’s deep respect and understanding of local produce, with each dish thoughtfully composed.
The entire experience breaks away from the usual heavy handed Thai flavors. It still captures the soul of Thai cuisine, but with a delicate, inventive twist that really hit the sweet spot for me. Every ingredient is sourced from organic farms across the country, and I can truly taste the seasons and the land in every bite."

"A Unique Culinary Journey at Blackitch
We didn’t go for the full pairing, but took the sommelier’s suggestion to try orange wine — and it paired beautifully all the way through the meal!
The tasting course was crafted with unique local ingredients from across Thailand, north to south, as shown clearly in the menu. It really felt like a food journey through the country.
Some dishes were easy to enjoy, while a few were a bit challenging for my taste — especially the one with blue cheese (not my favorite, but interesting!).
Desserts were lovely, especially with the refillable tea pairing from the restaurant — a nice touch.
The atmosphere was intimate and quiet. We started around 5 PM and finished by 7:30 PM. Considering the experience and creativity, it’s definitely worth trying at least once."

The best restaurants in Chiang Mai 2025
: An intimate, chef-driven kitchen tucked in a quiet corner of Nimmanhaemin that’s quietly (and consistently) redefining what Thai tasting menus can be. Chef Phanuphol Bulsuwan – aka Chef Black – offers a micro-seasonal, locally sourced, boundary-pushing menu changes every 3-4 months, exploring new techniques and flavours that are equal parts amazing, equal parts mad. Why we love it: In a sea of Chiang Mai restaurants either chasing tradition or flirting with fusion (often badly), Blackkitch does something rarer and far more daring – it experiments with Thai ingredients on their own terms.
A culinary guide to Chiang Mai
Blackitch Artisan Kitchen, a restaurant with 16 covers, is more anglicised. There are touch points with dishes I recognise from Thai culture, but it’s very contemporary: when I visited in July, the menu was called Rainy Season and used a lot of mushrooms that were being foraged then. To me it epitomises what is happening in some of Thailand’s bigger cities, where there’s a younger generation of chefs pushing the boundaries of what Thai food can be.

A unique chef's table concept, this intimate dining experience is located, but of course, in Chiang Mai's hip Nimmanhaemin neighbourhood. The young gourmand behind the concept, Chef Black, draws inspiration from the seasonal fresh ingredients available locally and also selects special items to be flown in to craft an artisanal menu that is never repeated twice. With only three tables, reservations are an absolute must and seats are often booked out months in advance.
