Reviews Summary

Soei is celebrated for its exceptionally flavorful and authentic Thai dishes, with many praising the unique seafood options and the standout fried garlic pork liver. However, some diners have noted inconsistencies in food quality, slow service, and a noisy atmosphere. The price point is considered moderate to high by some, and attentiveness from staff can be an issue.

"This place seriously makes the best fried garlic pork liver in the entire universe! I’ve tried a lot of garlic liver, but nothing comes close. As for the other dishes, you’ve got to try the stir-fried basil beef—so tender! The tom yum mackerel is super tasty, and the soup just goes down so smooth. Their stir-fried tofu with garlic and chili is crispy and perfect as a side. The beef tendon soup? It melts in your mouth! And the shrimp in spicy fish sauce is out-of-this-world spicy. All in all, I’m super impressed with the food here. It’s always busy, but the wait is never long. There’s seating both inside with AC and outside, but no parking lot, so you’ve gotta park on the street nearby and walk over. Overall, totally worth the hype!"

"The restaurant offers very delicious seafood dishes, with mackerel as the signature ingredient featured in various menus. The flavors are easy to enjoy, and the soup is perfectly sour and spicy. However, the atmosphere is quite noisy due to the building’s structure amplifying sound. The food preparation is slow—even though the menu notes that dishes are made in batches, the wait time feels excessive. Service also needs improvement, as it’s quite difficult to get the staff’s attention."

"Long awaited visit to Soei. I had the fried egg salad, fried mackarel heads, and soft shell crab curry. I must admit that perhaps my expectations might've been too high, as the food tasted just alright, not outstanding or great by any stretch of the imagination.

The mackarel heads were crispy and salted, which made for a nice snack. However, I would have liked it more if it was at least warm, as it was room temperature. On top of that, the fried garlic didn't really do anything to the dish, as there was simply not enough of it, as you can tell from the pic.

The egg salad was a miss for me. Although the yolk was nice and molten, I felt like the sauce that came with it was way too salty to the point where it almost felt like pure soy sauce. I could feel my blood pressure shoot through the roof.

The crab curry was decent but with a few caveats. The curry here is thinner than what you'd commonly find elsewhere, and it almost has a soup-like consistency. That said, while the curry powder seasoning was pronounced, the maggi seasoning (or perhaps some type of soy sauce blend) was even more prominent in the dish. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing (it's umami, after all), but too much maggi seasoning can overpower the natural taste of ingredients rather than complement it à la white fish or crustaceans. Catch my drift?

In conclusion, the food is satisfactory, but not what it has been made out to be."

Best Restaurants to Eat like a Local in Bangkok

The front, floral-tiled patio of this seafood haunt is reminiscent of a wet market after everything’s been meticulously hosed down. Plastic baskets of seafood on ice sit beside the kitchen and customers eat whole kaem pla too tod, garlicky mackerel heads so light and crisp they could have come from a chip packet. Visit hungry and order hot-as-hell tom yum pla too (mackerel tom yum soup); blood cockle salad lavished with herbs, shallots and galangal and aromatic pu pad pong garee (soft shell crab curry).
