The Secret Garden restaurant, in the ground-level courtyard, is almost exactly what it sounds like, while the rooftop Tea House is more than a tea house; it’s a restaurant serving a single seating — a sundown cocktail at 6 followed by a five-course tasting menu at 7 — on the open-air terrace with a view of the Stoneton rooftops. Reservations are essential, as it’s one of the most highly regarded tables in town — and we might just say the same of the hotel as well....

There are four options of dining as part of the Emerson group and we tried two of them. There are two rooftop restaurants, this Secret Garden (which was our favourite) and also a private dining option at Emerson on Humunzi. The Secret Garden was amazing - such a special courtyard location, excellent service and although we only had the one course (I had a vegetable biryani which was incredible with a naan style bread baked over the stone dish) we loved the experience.

Secret Garden is Zanzibar Stone Town’s newest and most charismatic outdoor events venue – which is saying something. This beautiful restaurant, live music venue, and event space has been carved out of some ruins in the center of Stone Town, and molded into an oasis of lush tropical gardens illuminated by twinkling fairy lights. It’s perfect for a long slow lunch, or an intimate evening event.

Secret Garden is a fancy restaurant located in an old garden, surrounded by old colonial buildings, right in the middle of Stone Town. It is decorated with beautiful wooden furniture and vintage decor. Despite being a fancy restaurant, they also offer a very affordable lunch set that comes with seafood and all kinds of traditional side dishes and spices for you to try.

We certainly can’t resist and loved visiting the Emerson Spice Garden, which is not really so secret, but is hidden behind a doorway. The café itself is really beautiful, with open air seating, or you can head upstairs for the overhead view. The food is all locally sourced with some great vegan and vegetarian options, though be warned, it does come with a price tag!

While in Stone Town, we recommend that you stay at Emerson Spice and dine at their Secret Garden restaurant. This romantic restaurant is situated in a walled garden with an atmosphere reminiscent of old Zanzibar. There are evening live music performances at Secret Garden every Wednesday and Friday.
