Reviews Summary

The Secret Garden is lauded for its uniquely magical and tranquil atmosphere, nestled within a lush courtyard. Guests rave about the vibrant flavors of the food, with the goat biryani and East African curry highlighted. While some find the service 'Pole Pole' (slow), the enchanting ambiance and occasional live music performances make it a highly recommended experience.

"That rare restaurant experience when an establishment of great aesthetic beauty serves equally excellent food.

I had goat biryani and it was delicious with exceptional flavor. Remove the bread “lid” baked into the clay pot, rather than start to make a hash of it with knife and fork. The waiter had to instruct me. 🙂

Music Wednesdays and Fridays when it’s not Ramadan."

"A special dinner experience in the heart of Stone Town. The Secret Garden, part of the famous Emerson Spice Hotel, is tucked away behind carved doors and old walls, an elegant corner of the city quietly brought back to life. The setting is lush with greenery—vines, palms, and blossoms softening the stone and timber, creating a space that feels both timeless and intimate. The menu is small and carefully curated, with each dish given attention and care. I chose the East African curry Kuku wa Kupaka—rich, fragrant, and deeply satisfying. On weekends, they host live concerts, adding another layer to the already magical atmosphere."

Oliver Heldt

"A beautiful restaurant in the heart of Stone Town, where you can dine in an indoor garden. We loved the dishes, and the use of spices is very unique. Some evenings they have live entertainment."

Emerson Spice - Zanzibar - Book a

The Secret Garden restaurant, in the ground-level courtyard, is almost exactly what it sounds like, while the rooftop Tea House is more than a tea house; it’s a restaurant serving a single seating — a sundown cocktail at 6 followed by a five-course tasting menu at 7 — on the open-air terrace with a view of the Stoneton rooftops. Reservations are essential, as it’s one of the most highly regarded tables in town — and we might just say the same of the hotel as well....

The Private Traveller

A Comprehensive Review of Park Hyatt Zanzibar in Stone Town

There are four options of dining as part of the Emerson group and we tried two of them. There are two rooftop restaurants, this Secret Garden (which was our favourite) and also a private dining option at Emerson on Humunzi. The Secret Garden was amazing - such a special courtyard location, excellent service and although we only had the one course (I had a vegetable biryani which was incredible with a naan style bread baked over the stone dish) we loved the experience.
