This place has its avid fans and its customers, unimpressed by offerings of Taiwan Beer, Kaoliang, pig's foot and chili pepper ice cream, who go away saying "meh", but I love the joint. It's small - easy to miss with no English sign and run mostly by a little old lady with a round, curly gray 'fro, and has the wildest ice cream in town (I'd say Movenpick has the "best" ice cream, but Taipei Snow King has the corner on uniqueness). Recommended: chili pepper, honey, wasabi, rose liqueur, plum wine, mint, cinnamon, ginger, carrot.

There’s no shortage of good ice cream in Taipei, but this isn’t why Snow King should be on your radar — this ice cream shop near Beimen has been around since 1947 and boasts over 70 flavours, many of which are uniquely Taiwanese and some of which are… unique. Snow King is not afraid to experiment with ingredients that you couldn’t in your wildest dreams imagine putting in ice cream, and it makes for an unforgettable Taiwanese experience.

A newspaper article on the wall here dating back to 1993 said they’d created 300 flavours by the 1990s so who knows how many there have been since.

But before you make your way to this popular dessert institution (or dismiss the idea of visiting 😔), here’s a thing or two that you should know about it. The name is Snow King Ice Cream.

Let’s start with the most unusual option: Snow King (雪王冰淇淋‭, ‬2F‭ ‬#65‭ ‬Wuchang‭ ‬St. Sect. 1, 武昌街1段65號2樓, 12-8pm). Located a block east of the Ximending pedestrian area and facing Zhongshan Hall, family-run Snow King has been serving weird and tasty ice cream since 1947. Today they claim to have 73 kinds, though some are seasonal.

Finally, we ended our Taipei food hunt at the famous Snow King Ice Cream (雪王冰淇淋), which serves some really unique ice cream flavours. Their pork floss ice-cream, really tasted like pork-floss in ice cream. Ask the staff for the popular flavours. Please don’t make the same mistake as us.
