No, it’s not something many would want to do, but that didn’t stop the Modern Toilet restaurant from opening in Taipei. It a hugely popular place serving up dishes and desserts that look like they belong in a toilet but that actually taste quite nice.

The Modern Toilet Restaurant is one of the most popular themed restaurants in Taiwan. It has a location in Hong Kong, and over 10 spots in Taiwan alone. The restaurant even has its own Wiki page.

Greeted by the sound of a toilet flushing and a sign proudly claiming 'crappy food', guests at this novelty restaurant need a certain sense of humour…

We start our Taipei with kids list with certainly one of the most fun things to do (slightly weird but wonderful). Taipei’s Modern Toilet themed restaurant is so popular, they are ‘flushed’ with success and children will love the crazy menu and sitting down on a toilet at the table. There are two toilet themed restaurants in Taipei, with a Modern Toilet branch near Shilin Night Market, plus Modern Toilet Ximending which reopened in 2024 after a lengthy closure (and everyone hates it when toilets are closed).

One that promises ‘crappy’ food and a dining experience like no other – time to ‘poop’ on over to Taipei, literally one of the ‘…sh*ttiest things to do in Ximending (but in a very good way!). Welcome to the Ximending Modern Toilet restaurant, where diners sit on a toilet bowl to eat at their ‘convenience’. The Modern Toilet in Taipei has two different branches (another Taiwan Modern Toilet Restaurant can be found in nearby Shilin) but the ‘flagsh*t’…sorry…flagship branch is in Ximending.

The Modern Toilet Restaurant is one of the best novelty restaurants we’ve visited and definitely one of the strangest!. This restaurant is all things toilet-themed, from the actual toilet seats to the toilet bowl styled foods, a visit to the Modern Toilet Restaurant will make you laugh and cringe in equal amounts. Drinking beer from an imitation bedpan and eating poo themed ice cream while sitting on full-sized toilets is an experience we won’t forget!

Before heading out to enjoy an evening watching the amazing dancing and acrobatics at the Taipei Eye, drop-in for a delicious meal at Taipei’s truly unique restaurant. Sit on colourful commodes alongside other diners as you wait for a bowl of spicy Sichuan hot pot or a Thai curry favourite served in a western or Asian style toilet. For western tastes, there is seafood spaghetti with cream sauce or chicken spaghetti with tomato sauce.

If there’s one restaurant that would make your trip to Ximen all the more interesting, it’s the Ximen Modern Toilet Restaurant. Just as its name suggests, it’s a restroom-themed restaurant where you can sit on (clean) toilet seats while you eat, the menu is in the shape of a toilet seat lid, and some food either served in bathtubs or even (appetizingly) shaped like poo!. It’s certainly a novel and bizarre way to dine.

Ximending is one of the quirkiest neighbourhoods in the city. Although Ximending is often touted as the party centre of Taipei, there’s plenty to do during the day and exploring there is one of our favourite things to do in Taipei with kids. The neighbourhood is full to the brim with shops and fashion boutiques, great cafes and restaurants, gallons of bubble tea, awesome street art and bright neon lights.

Modern Toilet in Taipei is well known for its toilet décor, drinks in urinals, and food served in a toilet bowl. The chocolate ice cream looks surprisingly shitty as does the curry. The food genuinely tastes pretty terrible, which may be part of the running joke, but it’s hard to miss this once-in-a-lifetime photo opp so let the toilet humor flow (sorry, I had to).

While toilets are usually something one avoids (unless you need to use one), this establishment has managed to build an entire space dedicated to the loo. The interior is kitted out to look like a bathroom, and diners sit on closed toilet bowls while glass-topped sinks act as dining tables.

One night in Ximending is all you need to see why it’s called the Harajuku of Taipei. As you stroll along the main stretch of the pedestrian area on Hanzhong Street and its side alleys, you’ll see plenty of quirky fashion stores, novelty souvenir shops, and more. You’ll also find a good number of unique eateries frequented by the young people of the area.

Ever since we decided to visit Taiwan, our kids were obsessed with visiting the Modern Toilet Restaurant. It’s almost impossible not to run into a street artist performance here – but other iconic experience to try out here, including the Modern Toilet Restaurant (which is only slightly less disturbing than it sounds) and KTV, a.k.a karaoke at the famous Party World.

Modern Toilet is a Taiwanese chain restaurant that first started in Kaohsiung. As the name suggests, it is a toilet and poo-themed restaurant. The Ximen branch was especially popular among tourists in the past, but then it closed for over 3 years due to COVID.

It’s commercial, over-hyped and just plain crude but if you have a good sense of toilet humour you’ll love the Modern Toilet Cafe. You’ll find this amusing tourist-trap right underneath the huge toilet sign!. Z loved her ‘poo’ for dessert!
