A small stand-alone chalet shoe-horned between larger buildings, this wood paneled bar has two floors joined by a steep staircase.

The Valais style bar was originally built in 1879 but was purchased by the famous Elsie in 1961. I saw the champagne Christmas tree outside and had to check it out, and I was instantly charmed. The interior is small and warm, but very chic, and the champagne and wine list are top notch.

Also fun to check out in town are Elsies, Brown Cow, Fuchs, Cervo, Culinary, After Seven, Unique Hotel, Ristorante Capri, and Grampies. The food and hospitality in Zermatt is next level, with a deep matriarchal vibe, and you will be very well cared for and happy wherever you end up.

It’s hard to get a table in the rather cramped Elsie’s Bar with its wonderful ambience and equally good Champagne and oysters, but it shouldn’t be missed.
