Visitors looking for a truly decadent experience can't do better than Les Trois Rois (www.lestroisrois.com; 00 41 61 260 50 50), housed in an imperious 19th-century building overlooking the Rhine and a host to politicians and royalty for over a century. Inside, an extensive refurbishment six years ago has left all of the individually designed rooms oozing Neo-classical charm, despite the presence of every mod-con guests could wish for. A new cigar lounge was recently added to the hotel's two restaurants and wood-panelled bar.

Wo sonst bekommt man in der Schweiz noch Klassiker wie Entenleberterrine, Perlhuhn mit frischen Morcheln und zum Dessert die am Tisch flambierten Crêpes Suzette für zwei Personen?

I stay at Les Trois Rois and love the breakfast at the brasserie there, which offers both French and Swiss cuisine. For dinner, a favorite is Restaurant Atelier Der Teufelhof, led by the chef Aschi Zahnd. I am looking forward to visiting the upcoming show “Bruce Nauman: Disappearing Acts” at Schaulager, the stunning Herzog & de Meuron–designed contemporary art warehouse.

For drinks: All the Buvette’s along the Rhine are a great option in warmer months and a cocktail at Les Trois Rois is a nice treat. For some ‘proper’ drinking and nightlife, head to Steinvorstadt later in the evening – it is lined with bars (Soho and Buchelis do great cocktails) and packed with people!

The view over the river (including from the roof) is fantastic, and the decor and architecture seem like something right out of Napoleon’s time. Plus, the food served at the on-site brasserie is top notch!

Exquisite gourmet creations are on offer at the Cheval Blanc, while Chez Donati serves up Italian specialities and the Brasserie oozes French charm. You don't have to stay overnight to feel welcome as a guest: just treat yourself, perhaps, to a leisurely breakfast in the most memorable of settings.

Run by Les Trois Rois hotel - see "Sleep", this is heavy but exquisite north Italian fare: the Osso Bucco (braised veal knuckles) are outstanding. Beautiful interior adorned by modern art, some of it by former patrons such as Andy Warhol.

The Brasserie in the hotel’s left wing with its elegant interior, pretty red table lamps and Rhine view is the embodiment of a lifestyle restaurant. Children in particular are sure of a great welcome here!

It has an amazing view overlooking the Rhine with great food, fresh from the market. I go to the Fondation Beyeler to walk around the gardens and enjoy the treasures of such a fabulous collection.
