This Södermalm temple to the most Swedish of dishes is really more of a deli than a restaurant, but it's worth a mention as a great place to sample the mighty köttbulle (meatball) as it should be eaten. A million miles from the mass-produced versions found in supermarkets and certain furniture stores, the köttbulle of Hampus Rosenqvist and his team are lovingly handmade from impeccably sourced meat, game, fish and fowl. As the name suggests, the focus is on perhaps the most famous Swedish dish, meatballs. In a beautiful brick building on the corner of Nytorgsgatan and Kocksgatan in Södermalm, you can feast on more than 15 different kinds of meatballs made from carefully selected quality meat, including pork, beef, wild boar, calf, moose, reindeer, haddock, salmon, and chicken (and there’s also a vegan option).

Different flavours and seasonings are all experimented with in the meatball format to make for a varied menu and if you're unsure what to have, there's always the chef's choice option, which removes decision-making paralysis with a mix of four or eight different varieties.

Enter, Meatballs for the People in the Södermalm district, which features on many of Stockholm’s ‘best cheap eats’ guides you’ll see online. We made a reservation the day before for a super ‘early bird’ lunch; classic meatballs for just 95 Swedish Kroner, which was an utter bargain if you consider you’d be hard pushed to find a main meal anywhere else for under 150-200. The plate comes with creamy mash and serve-yourself sides and of course, the best meatballs you’ll ever eat.

Everyone knows Sweden is famous for their meatballs, and there’s no better place to try them than at Meatballs for the People – except maybe IKEA. This fun and casual restaurant is a little touristy, but their meatballs are solid and their toast skagen was life-changing (seriously, don’t skip it). At Meatballs for the People, you can sample from more than 10 different types of meatballs, including reindeer, boar, and vegan, along with more classic options like beef and pork.

I tried the “all in” chef’s choice, which is made up of two meatballs of four different varieties (i.e. eight meatballs in total) plus silky potato purée, creamy veal gravy and tart preserved lingonberries.

Here, you can try meatballs made from many different animals and I can guarantee you’ve never tried half of them. Located in the vibrant Södermalm district, you are immediately greeted by a quirky mixture of rustic wood furniture and modern neon signs.

The most famous food in the Scandanavia, (and a certain well-known furniture store!) is given a modern twist at this cool and comfortable restaurant. The whole menu based around the humble meatball and it’s amazing!. We recommend you go for the classic beef balls served with buttery mash, lingonberry jam and a creamy broth.

If your looking for a spot to try Sweden’s arguably most famous dish, Meatballs for the People is a great spot to do it. They offer all kinds of meatball dishes, ranging from classic with lingonberries and cucumber (which I opted for), to more trendy dishes like “The Hipster” moose meatballs (that Sebastian ordered).

Above all, you can’t go to Stockholm without having meatballs!. Here you will find a selection of simple but absolutely delicious homemade, hand rolled meatballs served with mashed potatoes or salad. Strollers have to stay outside but children are welcome and they offer highchairs for older kids (no straps).
