When beloved Malmö restaurant Bastard evolved into Ruths, it not only extended its opening hours to the joy of local as well as visiting gastro geeks but added to its charm and edge with an all-day deli. The latter happens to boast many of the components of what’s carefully created and plated in the kitchen. House-made preserves, charcuterie, bread, and pastries can get you off to a pretty delicious start, while seasonal greens and goods from both near and more consistently sunny parts of Europe will serve you well in your Ruths inspired culinary adventures at home.

RUTH’S is a coffeehouse, deli, bakery and restaurant with the best cinnamon granola in town and their Turkish eggs are amazing as well which are only two reasons why it has to be mentioned in every Malmö Food Guide. I like the vibe and mixed clientele – from after-yoga-buddies to quick business lunch coworkers – perfect for people-watching and also getting some work done. Bring your laptop and stay for a coffee or two – oh, and don’t miss out on the pastries!.

Seven days a week from seven in the morning – Ruth is both early bird and night owl. At lunchtime they serve European à la carte dishes, a concept that also applies in the evening, but with more options and both small and larger dishes. In summer, you can eat and drink al fresco in the charming inner courtyard, and if you fancy buying something to take home with you, you can buy bread, vegetables, fruit, accessories and charcuterie in the deli.

Bastard marked the beginning of a new era for Malmö's wine and restaurant scene, and played a significant role in shaping the city's culinary identity as we know it today.

No matter what you are thinking of, British chef Matt, previously from Ruths, together with his partner Matilda will gladly learn you all about it with a smile on their face. In 2022, Marvin opened up its doors at Davidshall to bring you classic dishes such as Steak & Ale, muffin and scotch egg. Recently even Sunday roasts is a possibility to enjoy if you are quick to grab a seat when it gets announced.

The restaurant formerly known as Bastard has become Ruths, an all-day bakery and eatery, open daily from early morning until late night. Swing by in the morning for coffee, porridge, egg dishes, and freshly baked pastries, like a brown butter cardamom twist or an Argentinian medialuna. The lunch menu features snacks and a few lighter dishes, and the dinner menu adds wood-fired pizzas to the roster.

What used to house the much beloved restaurant Bastard, in 2021 the name was changed to Ruths (named after the child of co-owner and chef Andreas Dahlberg) and turned into an all-day eatery. And with an all-day eatery, baked goods are of course a definitive must-have outside their other breakfast, lunch and dinner offerings. We’re happy to report that such baked goods at Ruths do not disappoint!

Ruths is to Malmö what Noma is to neighbouring Copenhagen: somewhat of an incubator for chefs who then go on to open their own restaurants. Some of the best chefs in Malmö have worked here, like Sahin Erdal, former head chef at Aster, Matt Young who runs Marvin, specialising in British-style pies, Wade Brown who runs Pink Head Noodle Bar, and Alexander Norén, co-owner of Thai restaurant Soi 29.

Open from 7am until late every day except Sundays, Ruths in the heart of Malmö’s old town is a restaurant, deli and bakery. Ruth’s starts the day serving pastries and delicious breakfast bowls – rice pudding with pomegranate and almond shavings, Turkish fried eggs – and ends with an ever-changing dinner menu. It’s not exactly tapas, but they recommend that you take two or three dishes per person. You don’t have to ask us twice.

Last year I had Bastard on my guide, they have now changed their concept and are now Ruths. A restaurant, bakery and deli and they are open from 7am until midnight (!). We stopped there for a croissant and coffee because once again, I was so full, but the croissant was amazing!

We have will always have a stopover in Malmó just to taste the delicious cuisine and enjoy the great atmosphere all day. The flavour combinations and ingredients used are of very high quality, and their freshly baked breads and patisserie are equally exceptional.
