Old Town is one of the only specialty coffee shops in San Sebastián, but their flat whites are more than just gorgeous cups of caffeine. The young owners roast their own beans just outside city limits, and at least one of them is always on hand to explain the coffee’s notes and where it’s from. Post up at the bar or on the patio and pair your coffee with brunch staples like avocado toast with salmon, bread with Spanish ham and tomato, or yogurt bowls topped with fruit and granola.

In the Centro neighborhood, Old Town Coffee is your best bet, run by veterans of the coffee scene in town. In Gros, stop by Simona Speciality Coffee Club, where the flat whites are fab and the ambience is light-filled and open.

What started off as a passion project between two coffee-loving Brazilian friends has become a local favorite, known for some of the best coffee in San Sebastian. Old Town Coffee might always be packed, but despite the crowds, owners Márcio and Ricardo always find the time to strike up a friendly conversation with each customer. A nerve center and the heart of the city’s social activity, the historic district is located at the foot of Monte Urgull between the port and the Urumea River. Wander through a maze of cobbled pedestrian streets, lined with numerous “ pintxos” bars – typically Basque tapas bars – where you can enjoy delicious local food while sipping on a glass of wine. This quarter hosts the famous Tamborrada of Donostia, a celebratory drum festival held every year on January 20th since 1836, to commemorate the Napoleonic occupation.

During the day, the old town is the area where all the tourists go to in order to discover the History of Donosti and its so typical Txikiteros (wine bars). Nevertheless, at night, the place offers another range of activities, displaying a lively and fun atmosphere, with bars that will please everyone. We started with a delicious breakfast with amazing specialty coffee at Old Town Coffee (Reyes Católicos Kalea, 6). This tiny establishment serves delicious house espresso blend accompanied with healthy but tasty toasts and the staff is absolutely delightful. Make sure you stop here at some point in your trip!

This brunch spot offers indoor and outdoor seating as well as being specialty coffee roasters. Tables tend to fill up quickly and they don’t take reservations, so there can be a waiting list. We grabbed a coffee to go, but we saw some of the brunch dishes and cake slices being served which looked very good.

Old Town Coffee is one of the top spots for an early morning brew in SS. We love it because there’s something of an obsession with the beans here – try the aeropress to really make the most of them. Toned down interior with polished concrete means you can meditate and chill before your session in the water.

Interestingly, most of what you see today is actually the result of a long restoration and reconstruction work. The buildings in this area were destroyed by fire around the 14th century, caused by the siege of the Anglo-Portuguese troops who freed the city from French occupation. Plaza de la Constitución..

Opening in 2015 by a group of young friends, Old Town Coffee is well known as one of the best breakfast spots in the city. They are particularly famous for their coffee, which they roast themselves on site. It’s a little more modern than some of the other traditional coffee shops in the city.

A few that pop up on various lists of the city’s best include Bar Borda Berri, Bar Nestor, La Cuchara de San Telmo (where the pintxos isn’t on display but you can order from a menu) and La Viña, where you can also sample the famous cheesecake they make fresh everyday.

Old Town Coffee is for sure the best specialty coffee bar of San Sebastián. Their single-origin coffee beans are roasted in-house on their own Probat roaster. In 2015 this successful place was set up by two childhood friends who were both passionate about coffee.

As the name says and similar to many other cities this is the old part of the town. This is also where most of the pintxo bars are. I was staying at an Airbnb here and I thought it was very good to stay in the centre close to the bars.
