Located at the southern end of Ronda’s enchanting old Moorish quarter, Almocabar is a meat eater’s paradise and said by many locals to be the best restaurant in town – period. Beef and lamb dishes are cooked at your table, whilst other raciones (main courses) show off the wonderful flavours of locally-caught rabbit and partridge. Particularly recommended are the pig cheeks, the pork chops and the to-die-for desserts, all of which can be enjoyed in a smart dining room or a spacious outside terrace.

Restaurante Almocábar (Calle Ruedo Alameda, 5; 0034 952 875 977) offers simple but excellent alternatives, with the emphasis on salads and inventive fish dishes (such as squid rings stuffed with chives and truffle) at £30 a head.

Tucked away at the southernmost end of Ronda’s historic centre, this charming little neighbourhood tapas bar and restaurant is very much one for all seasons. On chilly winter nights, great hearty plates of oven-cooked lamb and partridge stew are served up in the cosy interior. In the summer, by contrast, the terrace is a great spot for sitting out in the square over a cool gazpacho or one of their fine salads and admiring the swooping swallows against a backdrop of the Moorish Puerta de Almocabar gate.

Named after the Almocabar (Al-maqabir) or former cemetery on which this fabulous restaurant sits, in a leafy square right next to the city wall with a great playground, Almocabar serves an array of beautifully presented, excellent dishes with some wonderfully balanced flavours. Summer brings the tables out under the stars in a corner of the lovely Plaza Ruedo Alameda, with its many bars and charming locals. Service is friendly and the clientele is mainly locals in the know.

For a more upscale dining experience, make a reservation at Restaurante Almocabar, housed in a beautifully restored 17th-century mansion overlooking the Tajo Gorge. Here, you can indulge in modern interpretations of Andalusian classics, such as grilled octopus with saffron aioli, slow-roasted suckling pig with honey glaze, and pistachio-crusted sea bass with citrus beurre Blanc.

Some of the vegetarian-friendly restaurants in Ronda include Pizzeria Da Vinci, Puerta Grande, Siempre Igual, Al-Zahra Arabian Food, Las Tablas Restaurante, Toro Tapas, Almocabar, Bifana Bar, Meson El Sacristan, Restaurante Las Maravillas, Tapas Bar La Nina Adela, Azahar by Eboca Restaurant – Hotel Catalonia Reina Victoria and Miyagi Express Sushi Bar.

The much grander gate further down at Almocabar may look like a main entrance, but it was only used by the limited traffic coming in from the coast, or by local farmers needing to go into that specific part of the city. There used to be a cemetery right by the gates where the square is today, so not exactly where you’d want to welcome your guests.

I’m afraid that the other photos I took of Restaurante Almocábar have gone missing – this is one I salvaged from my iPhone. But it’s probably enough to make you want to go there, right?. We were on a lunchtime “tapeo” as I wanted to try as many places as possible during our 24-hour visit, and the Almocábar was stop number one that afternoon.

Almocabar Tel 952 87 59 77 – this bar/restaurant (great for lunch or dinner) is a good downhill walk from the centre of Ronda but worth it. It’s a firm favourite of Australian Chef Frank Camorra. Game is a big thing in this area and here I just love the partridge pate, washed down by a local red such as Pago el Espino, Los Aguilares.

Worth mentioning as they have been reviewed by visiting tourist to Ronda are Meson El Sacristan, De Locos Tapas, Puerta Grande, Almocabar, Traga Tapas, Restaurante Goyesca, Restaurante La Carreta, Meson Rondeno, Carmen de la Ronda and Faustino.

Soulful Almocabar meanwhile, has been consistently one of the town’s finest places to eat for well over a decade, with a superb wine list and atmosphere personified, particularly if eating in the square outdoors at summer time.

Just outside the Ronda old city walls, Restaurante Almocábar turns out mouth-watering dishes anchored to family recipes. Sit outside in the plaza and let owner Francisco select the meal for you.

Located near the Almocabar gate, this restaurant offers a cozy atmosphere and delicious Spanish cuisine. Their grilled meats are particularly popular.

Almocabar, also of the square, offers more complex tapas and raciones using fine ingredients and a certain degree of flair.
