This is one of the best – and smallest – local tapas joints in Ronda. Sitting unassumingly on a side street just back from Plaza España, it’s packed with Rodeños at lunchtimes and in the evenings (always a good sign), who crowd into its standing-room only bar for tapas that cost as little as 80 cents a pop. Shoulder in amongst them and enjoy the insanely cheap, traditional food and wash it down with some of the bar’s excellent wines.

Pound for pound Ronda was our top food city, although our two meals there could not have been more different (the other, the legendary and astonishingly cheap El Lechuguita). But I started having my doubts about Casa Mateos when the second local we met told us we absolutely must go to Tragatá, Benito Gómez’s more affordable project after two Michelin Bardal. The saving grace was when the second local, while playing chess with my friend in Olvera, enthusiastically told us about his other favorite, Casa Mateos.

A tapas route in Ronda would not be complete without a stop at this bar. The bad thing is that it is tiny, so you might have to wait (luckily, there are a handful of other recommended places on the same street). The tapas cost 0,90€ and are very varied: from chickpeas with chorizo and black pudding to smoked cod toast, from quail egg with ham to marinated pork loin with cheese, from pringá to goat cheese with raspberry… and of course the tapa of the house: a fresh head of lettuce with dressing.

Taste delicious Iberian ham as well as local goat and ewe’s milk cheese in Tienda Trinidad before heading to El Lechuguita and the Bar Almacen to try out some freshly-prepared Spanish delicacies from a wide range of tapas. One of the most popular places in Ronda is El Lechuguita, a busy tapas bar with a huge selection of traditional Spanish tapas. If you travel with children, you will have a wide selection of possibilities to see in and near Ronda. The youngest will have fun in the villages near to Ronda as well as visiting the museum “el bandolero” which review the Spanish history of one of the most important bandits in Spanish history. The fun park at Alameda could be a great activity also.

This charming eatery specializes in Moorish-inspired tapas, such as spiced lamb kebabs, savory pastries filled with spinach and pine nuts, and aromatic couscous dishes. El lechuguita is a tiny bar on a corner of Ronda, although an essential stop for its friendly ambiance and vast array of tapas, we suggest you enjoy both the callos and the stuffed peppers. It’s also important to keep in mind you must arrive early, otherwise, you’ll be left out and wanting because, as we said, this place is tiny.

Enjoy the great variety of food offered by this wonderful bar for only 0’90 a tapa. Its menu has vegetarian options and a lot of food alternatives to traditional food such as: montaditos, french fries, salad, grilled meat on skewers, etc…. Fast service, you just have to choose what you want to eat, order and wait to be called.

It is small, but with a very well used space, although nothing like being at the bar to see everything up close. The drink is ordered in one part and for the food they give you a piece of paper with all the options and you have to mark the quantity and what you want. Tapas start at €0.90, some are €3 and portions are €6.

Bar El Lechuguita is a tapas bar that was packed at all hours of the day. When we walked by at night and the line had finally died down, we stopped in for a few traditional tapas. Even though we had already eaten dinner, I didn’t want to leave Ronda without trying one of the most popular spots.

Queues are also the norm because it’s a very small place, with a few tall tables and a bar. When you sit down, the waiter will bring a piece of paper with all the tapas written on it. You need to tick off the ones you want and take the paper to the bar.
