The Canarians are rightly proud of their cooking, which is precisely why there’s such a proliferation of traditional island restaurants dotting the archipelago. Finding one that offers something a little bit different is the key, and the trendy Tasca Ihüey in Puerto de la Cruz old town is such a gem. Claudio and Melisa, the owners, don’t just present their passion for Tenerife in the food they produce, but also in the local wines, the Canarian lace napkins, and crockery commissioned from island artisans.

By now, most people know that the place to find great gastronomy in Puerto de la Cruz is La Ranilla, the former fishermen’s district which has now become the restaurant hub of the town. Formerly favoured by traditional, old fashioned restaurants, Calle San Felipe which borders the Ranilla district on its southern side is joining the district’s gastronomic ranks and it’s where you’ll find Tasca Ihüey, right next door to the excellent El Taller Seve Diaz.

Ilhuey Tasca is probably the best restaurant in Puerto de la Cruz if you want a bit of a fancier meal. It’s a good one for your last night so that you end your trip on a high. Although it’s slightly posher than more traditional places, doing things like serving an amuse-bouche in between courses, it really isn’t pretentious at all.

For our first evening of the holiday, we opted for dinner at Tasca Ihüey, a restaurant recommended to us by our hotel. We hadn’t done much restaurant research before our trip (very unlike me), so didn’t know what to expect. Thankfully, Tasca Ihüey didn’t disappoint.

Tasca Ihüey is the perfect to meeting point between gastronomy lovers and those who are looking for a good place to eat in Tenerife.
