For lovers of fried fish and seafood, El Pulguilla is a must on your visit to this town. Located just a few metres from the Balcony of Europe (Balcón de Europa), it is an example of a traditional restaurant in the area. Hence, it presents its customers with the produce it works with in a display counter full of fresh fish of the highest quality so they can get carried away by what they see.

We may not be able to pronounce it, but Cerveceria El Pulguilla definitely does some of the best tapas in Nerja. When it’s somewhere favoured by the locals you know they’re doing things properly, and Cerveceria El Pulguilla’s fresh and simple tapas means that Spanish is the language that you’re most likely to hear at the bar.

Immediately beyond on the left is Sevillanos (3), after that follow the way downhill to Bar El Pulgilla (4) on your left. This is a fish restaurant but they serve both meat and fish tapas at the bar. Turn left out of Pulgillas and almost immediately on your right is La Taverna (5) with another good array.

Prawns Pil Pil consists of grilled prawns soaked in butter, garlic and chilli (Ooo, I’m salivating just thinking about it). No prawns pil-pil is ever the same and we definitely sampled a variety throughout the course of 2 weeks. We’ve come to the conclusion that Pulguilla Restaurant is where it’s at.

We have two downtown tapas bars that we recommend – El Pulguilla is one of them. It is a huge place serving many, many customers which are both local (mostly) and foreigner. The prime spot for tapas are the 10 or so little tables outside the restaurant (get there early).

Bar el Pulguilla is a great spot for some traditional tapas and fried seafood. The bar is much larger than it appears, with a typical bar setup up front and an outdoor garden dining room in the back. The service was fast and the food was quite inexpensive.

One of the best places to eat tapas in Nerja is El Pulguilla. It’s an old tapa place, so don’t expect nice tables and decor, but the food is really good. So if you’re after good food instead of the look, I recommend this place.

El Pulguilla is the place to go for proper traditional Spanish comfort food. The atmosphere is pure old-school Andalusian – ceramic tiles, hanging jamón, and conversations that span three generations.
